Scots Split with Earlham and Franciscan

NORTH RIDGEVILLE, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's tennis team split a pair of matches Saturday.

First, they lost a tough match to Earlham College 5-4 but rebounded with a 9-0 win over Franciscan University.

Against Earlham, the men fell behind early in doubles play but picked up the last win in the No. 1 doubles flight 8-5 behind the duo of Austin Hanna and Nate Devereux.

In singles play, Devereux picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win in the No. 3 flight, and Alon Liberman won 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot.

Nebyou Minassie's 0-6, 6-1, 6-3 comeback win in the No. 6 flight put Wooster ahead with two matches still in play, but the Scots dropped those last two. Joaquin Abos Amo lost a three-setter, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, in the No. 2 flight.

Wooster won in in straight sets later in the day against Franciscan.

The No. 1 team of Abos Amo and Devereux as well as the No. 2 team of Hanna and Liberman each won 8-2. The No. 3 team of Minassie and Saeed Husain won 8-4.

Hanna then led the Scots in singles play, taking the No. 1 flight 6-1, 6-2. Abos Amo won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 2, and Devereux won 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3.

Rounding out the lineup, Jesse DeWitt won 6-2, 6-0 in the No. 4 flight. Minassie won in the No. 5 flight 6-2, 6-1, and Husain took the No. 6 spot 7-5, 6-0.

Wooster is now 3-1 on the season, and they will travel to Ohio Wesleyan on Friday.
