The College of Wooster held late leads over Allegheny College in both games of its doubleheader Wednesday, but the Gators scored winning runs in the seventh and sixth innings, respectively, to send the Fighting Scots home with heartbreaking 3-2 and 5-4 setbacks in North Coast Athletic Conference action at Meadville, Pa.

Kate Edgehouse pitched a strong game in the opener, as she retired the first nine batters she faced and allowed only one earned run overall, but Allegheny (10-13, 5-1 NCAC) found a way to edge out the Scots (10-15, 2-4 NCAC) in the end.

After the Gators scored on an RBI single in the fifth inning to take a 1-0 lead, Wooster responded with a two-run sixth. Georgia Hill led off the frame with a solo home run down the right field line, and later, Kristyn Swanson came around to score due to a fielding error, which put the Scots ahead 2-1.

Allegheny tacked on an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score 2-2, and then in the seventh, a couple Wooster miscues allowed the Gators to generate another unearned run, with this one deciding the outcome.

The Scots gave themselves more cushion to work with in the nightcap, beginning with Hill driving in Paige Goldberg in the first inning to make it 1-0 early. Wooster added three more runs in the third, as Skye Patterson scored from second base after a fielding error and Hill continued her offensive onslaught with a triple that plated a pair to give the Scots a 4-0 advantage.

Just like the first game, Allegheny didn't go away, as it scored once in the fourth and three times in the fifth to draw even at 4-4. Finally, in the sixth inning, Allegheny had two outs against it with no one on, but managed to rally and produce a run to go up 5-4 heading into the seventh. The Scots weren't able to score a tying run, though, despite generating two base runners in the final frame.

Overall, it was another impressive day for newcomer Hill, who raised her batting average to a team-leading .433 with a 3-for-6 effort that included four RBIs. Aundrea Atwell and Carly Schoenstein each collected two hits in the opener, while Demi Hart went 2-for-3 with a run scored in the second game.

Wooster will look to bounce back when it makes a trip to Hiram College on Saturday. The doubleheader kicks off at 1 p.m.
