Scots Edged Out in Pitcher's Duel at Kenyon, 2-1

First-year pitcher Kate Edgehouse held Kenyon College in check during the second game of a North Coast Athletic Conference doubleheader Friday, allowing just seven hits and two earned runs over six strong innings, but The College of Wooster came up short, 2-1, in a pitcher's duel at Gambier, Ohio. The opening game saw the Ladies prevail 8-0.

Kenyon (19-13, 4-8 NCAC) took a 1-0 lead just moments into the first inning, as its leadoff hitter smacked a triple and then scored on a wild pitch. Edgehouse settled in after that, with Kenyon hitting into an inning-ending double play, and the score remained 1-0 entering the third frame.

It was then that Wooster (11-22, 3-9 NCAC) got on the scoreboard, when Paige Goldberg drove in pinch runner Julia Williams with a single through the left side to tie the game at 1-1.

Edgehouse continued to pitch well, as she held Kenyon scoreless in the bottom of third and fourth innings, but the Ladies tacked on a run in the fifth frame with a sacrifice fly to left field which wound up being the winning run.

Overall, Edgehouse struck out five batters and walked only two, but took the tough-luck loss. Aside from Goldberg's single, Jenna Kendall was the other Scot with a hit, which came on a two-out single in the fourth inning. She advanced to third via a throwing error on the play, but Wooster wasn't able to knock her home.

The story of the lid-lifter was Kenyon pitcher Maddy Stark, who won her league-leading 17th game in convincing fashion, limiting Wooster to just one hit (Goldberg) while striking out four. Kenyon scored a pair of runs in the first inning from a two-run homer, and then added two more in the fourth and four in the fifth en route to a 8-0 run-rule victory.

Wooster will wrap up the regular season with a series of three home doubleheaders, beginning Wednesday with Denison University (13-11, 5-3 NCAC) at 3:30 p.m.
