WOOSTER, Ohio – Carly Schoenstein capped off a four-run seventh inning with a two-run homer to left field to lead The College of Wooster to a 5-4 walk-off victory over Heidelberg University in the opening game of a non-conference doubleheader Thursday afternoon at Galpin Park. The Fighting Scots went on to drop the nightcap, 10-5.

Trailing 4-1 entering the bottom of the seventh, Skye Patterson led off frame with a single to left field and then advanced to second base moments later on a wild pitch. Next up was Paige Goldberg, who collected her third hit of the game, a single to center, which put runners on the corners with no one out.

The Scots (12-25) then used some aggressive base running to score their first run of the inning, as Heidelberg (22-12) made an error trying to prevent a double steal from Goldberg and Patterson, which allowed the latter to cross home plate, making it a 4-2 game.

A bit later, Georgia Hill hit her league-leading 29th RBI on a deep single to right center that plated Goldberg and pulled Wooster within one (4-3).

That led to Schoenstein, who smashed her third career home run, a two-out blast over the left field fence, which gave the Scots an exciting 5-4 win.

Wooster's other run came in the fourth inning, when Taylor Raybuck hit a bases-loaded sacrifice fly that scored Schoenstein.

Jenna Kendall improved to 2-0 on the season with a complete game victory. She scattered just six hits with no walks and struck out two in a solid performance.

The second game was an offensive battle that saw Wooster come up short despite matching its production from the first game with an identical 11-hit, five-run stat line.

Key moments for the Scots came in the second inning, when Demi Hart hit a two-run homer to right center, and in the sixth when Goldberg drove in a pair with a single down the left field line. Ultimately, Heidelberg's five-run first inning was too much for Wooster to overcome, though.

Overall, it was a strong day for Aundrea Atwell, as she raised her batting average to .324 with a 4-for-5 effort at the plate, including two doubles that reached the warning track. Goldberg was also zeroed in, as she went 5-for-7 with two runs, two RBI, and a stolen bag.

The Scots will close out the 2014 season with a doubleheader against North Coast Athletic Conference opponent DePauw University (21-15, 11-3 NCAC) on Saturday at 1 p.m.
