Scots’ Offense Held in Check as Denison Takes Two at Granville

A 1-0 pitchers' duel in the day's opener fell Denison University's way, while the Big Red tacked on six late runs to pull away in the nightcap to complete the doubleheader sweep over The College of Wooster softball team on Friday afternoon at Granville, Ohio.

Junior Maddy Chase allowed one run on four hits in a full six innings of work in game one, but the Fighting Scots (14-18, 5-5 North Coast Athletic Conference) could not overcome the deficit as Denison's Sarah Herold, who also allowed four hits, pitched a complete game shutout on top of scoring the game-winning run.

Three of those hits off Herold came from the bat of first-year Marina Roski, who went a perfect a 3-for-3 on the day. The Big Red (21-9, 7-3 NCAC) took the go-ahead lead with two down in the bottom of the first inning, as Herold, who reached on a single through the left side, advanced to second on a groundout before crossing home plate on a single from Lauren Secaras.

Senior Jenna Kendall earned the Scots' fourth hit after reaching on a single to third base in the second inning.

In the nightcap, Denison opened with solo runs in the first and second innings as Herold opened the scoring on a sacrifice fly from Laura Bagan before teammate Charlotte Happel crossed home in the second inning after initially reaching on an error.

Kendall doubled to right center to halve the deficit in the fourth inning, as she brought in classmate Linea Brouse who originally reached on a walk. In the fifth, Wooster left the equalizing run stranded at third as Chase, who singled to right center, advanced two more bags on a sacrifice bunt from sophomore Bridget Serrurier and a groundout from Roski.

From there, Denison pulled away with a trio of runs in both the fifth and sixth innings. Both Bagan and Happel posted doubles in the fifth inning, with Bagan's scoring one and Happel's two, while Secaras connected on a three-run homer in the sixth off Kendall, who took over for Chase in the third inning.

Up next, Wooster hosts Allegheny College (6-20, 1-7 NCAC) for a doubleheader on Wednesday, April 19, with the first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
