WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster softball team earned its first North Coast Athletic Conference victory of the season with a series split against Hiram College on Thursday afternoon at Galpin Park.

Wooster (8-14, 1-3 NCAC) fell 4-2 in the opener after holding a 2-1 lead through four innings. Senior Maddy Chase drove in junior Chelsea Copley and first-year Torrey Totman with a single to right center in the bottom of the fourth before the Terriers (8-13, 1-3 NCAC) answered with three runs in the fifth, all with two outs down.

From there, the Fighting Scots went down in order in both the sixth and seventh frames as Hiram recorded its first league win.

In the nightcap, Wooster won 6-2 behind a career-best 4-for-5 performance from sophomore Marina Roski. Notably, each Scot run was batted in by a different student-athlete, as Wooster totaled 12 hits in the game compared to Hiram's five.

First-year pitcher Olivia Johnson moved to 4-5 on the year with 4.0 innings of two-run ball, while classmate Marissa Norgrove etched her name into the record books with her third save of the season, tying '03 alumna Trish Gordon for most career saves in program history, as well as for most saves in a single-season (3).

Roski opened the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the first inning. In the next frame, first-year Rachel Ginsburg reached successfully on a bunt single before stealing second. From there, Chase singled to left field to score Ginsburg as Wooster took a 2-0 advantage.

After a two-run Hiram homer in the bottom of the second, Wooster tacked on a pair of runs in both the fourth and sixth innings.

In the fourth, Copley earned a walk with the bases loaded to score Chase before Totman walked, again with the bases loaded, to score Roski. Two innings later, Roski connected on her second double of the game before subbing out for pinch runner Samantha Tromba, who eventually scored on a sac bunt from sophomore Morgan Bailey. Later in the inning, sophomore Savanna Hitlan came through in a big way with her second hit of the season, an RBI single through the left side to score first-year Heidi Likins.

Norgrove, who subbed in for Johnson at the start of the fifth, allowed just two hits while striking out four, a personal season-best for appearances lasting three innings or less.

It wasn't just on the offensive end, though, that kept the Scots ahead, with Roski making it look easy with a diving snag at short and subsequent throw from her knees for the 6-3 putout. Additionally, Likins showed her quick glove on a hard-hit lineout along the left-field line in the bottom of the third.

Up next, Wooster travels to Kenyon College (15-11, 1-3 NCAC) for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 7, with first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
