Pitching on Point as Scots Sweep

The College of Wooster softball team collected it first shutout of the season behind the arm of first-year Tori Conner as the Scots swept John Carroll University, 2-0 and 3-2, on Wednesday.

It was Conner's first collegiate shutout and her second complete game, allowing just three hits and striking out four across seven innings. She had four 1-2-3 innings and went a span where she retired nine straight.

Wooster's offense did just enough, collecting six hits with a run in the fourth and sixth innings. Conner scored the first run on a sacrifice fly from Ella Wolff. Unfortunately, it turned into a double play to end the inning but not before scoring the run.

Then in the sixth Ciara Herbert, who was on as a pinch runner, scored from third after a throw down from the catcher ricocheted off her back and into no man's land.

Emma Hetkey led the offense with two hits. 

John Carroll's Danielle Orendi took the tough loss after giving up just one earned run in five innings of work.

In game two, Wooster gave starter Lynnsey Delio a two-run cushion in the first inning as Julia Jennings and Cate Barkdoll each hit RBI singles to the outfield. Both runs were unearned after Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez reached on a misplay in the first at bat.

Griffin-Sanchez coming around to score in the first inning was her 100th time doing so in a Scots' uniform. 

She would score again in the seventh, putting her four away from tying the program record. It was a crucial run as John Carroll (1-14) tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the seventh.

Griffin-Sanchez led off the seventh with a single and later advanced to second on a sacrifice and to third on a wild pitch.

Then, Conner came in clutch again, hitting the walk-off single to give Wooster (9-13) the sweep.

Conner this time had two hits to lead Wooster, who sprayed nine hits across the game.

Delio had a solid outing, throwing the complete game, striking out three and allowing two earned runs.

John Carroll's Kristin Dems took the no decision, pitching four innings with both runs given up coming up unearned.

Next up for Wooster, North Coast Athletic Conference play begins with a trip to Denison University ono Saturday.
