Walk-Off, Pitching Highlight Second Sweep This Week

The College of Wooster softball team picked up a pair of North Coast Athletic Conference wins on Sunday after walking off Oberlin College, 3-2 in eight innings, in game one and shutting them out, 2-0, in game two.

First-year Madi Yankauskas played hero in game one with a walk off single in the bottom of the eighth to score Cate Barkdoll, who started the inning with a lead off double.

Yankauskas produced her first multi-hit game with the single, going 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Scots scored three unanswered after Oberlin scored two runs in the top of the first against first year starter Tori Conner.

Conner entered on a 14-inning scoreless streak that unfortunately got interrupted in the first. However, she started a new streak, not allowing a run for the remainder seven innings of the game.

Conner pitched her third straight complete game this week, going all eight innings on Sunday, striking out two and allowing nine hits.

Barkdoll gave Wooster its first run back in the second, scoring Conner on a single through the left side. Barkdoll collected a season-high three hits and two doubles.

Wooster had four stolen bases in the game, including one from Yankauskas who swiped second after leading off the fifth with a single. Stephanie Griffin-Sanchez moved over to third before the first-year scored on a grounder to short from Emma Hetkey.

Wooster collected 10 hits. First-year Brenna Haydu went 2-for-3, and Julia Jennings went 2-for-4.

In game two, Wooster collected its third shutout this week and second 2-0 win as the seniors Rachael Dudziak and Lilly McLendon got the job done on the mound.

Dudziak started and collected the win, allowing four hits across four innings. McLendon picked up her first career save, allowing one hit in the final three frames.

Conner gave Wooster the go-ahead run in the third inning on a single to center field to score Hetkey. Wooster got insurance in the sixth as senior Ciara Herbert scored from third on a sacrifice bunt from Ella Wolff.

Wooster spread across six hits with Hetkey leading the way going 2-for-3. Griffin-Sanchez's lone hit was a triple in the fifth.

Oberlin drops to 3-17 overall and 0-4 in the NCAC. Wooster, now winners of five of their last six, improves to 12-14 and 4-1 in conference play.

Wooster will hope to keep its winning ways when they host Kenyon College on Wednesday in another NCAC matchup.
