Scot Women Cruise to Second of 11 at Own Wooster Invitational

Courtney McGovern was part of six top-3 performances at this
year's Wooster Invitational, including a second-place finish in the
200 freestyle on Friday (pictured).

The College of Wooster's women's swimming and diving team delivered its highest finish at its own Wooster Invitational since 2009, as the Fighting Scots placed second, only behind NCAA Div. II school Gannon University, at the three-day, 11-team meet that wrapped up on Saturday evening at Wooster High School's Ellen Shapiro Natatorium.

The Scots jumped into second place on day one and never looked back on their way to 1,111.5 points. Gannon, which was nationally-ranked last season, won the team championship with 1,489.5 points, while Case Western Reserve University (1,052) and Westminster College (1041.5) also surpassed 1,000 points en route to third- and fourth-place, respectively.

It was in relay competition where Wooster set the tone, as it finished third or higher in three different relay events, highlighted by a first-place finish in the 400 medley relay. That group, consisting of Courtney McGovern, Alexandra Desotelle, Morgan Hughes, and Jillian Saccogna, touched the wall in 3:56.07, just a fingertip ahead of Div. II's Edinboro University (3:56.12).

The Scots added third-place finishes in the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.92), with Saccogna, McGovern, Jamie Hibbs, and Hughes, and in the 200 medley relay (1:47.70), with McGovern, Desotelle, Hughes, and Saccogna – and the latter time was just shy of a 14-year-old school record (1:47.40).

McGovern, who had a hand in all three aforementioned relays, was also a major contributor individually. Most notably, McGovern put on quite the show in her signature events, as she placed first and recorded NCAA "B" cut times in both the 100 and 200 backstrokes.

In the 100, she nearly matched the school record time she clocked at last year's NCAA Div. III Championships (57.02), this time touching in 57.20. Then in the 200, McGovern won the championship heat in 2:04.18, more than two seconds quicker than her nearest challenger. Rounding out a sensational weekend, McGovern was second in the 200 freestyle in a time of 1:54.32.

There were several other individual standouts, including Hughes, who made the championship finals in both the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle. In the fly, Hughes took fourth in 58.69, and she was sixth in the free in 53.24. She also chipped in 10th-place points in the 50 free (24.46).

Also earning significant points for the Scots was Saccogna, who placed fourth in the 50 free (24.16), won the consolation finals (ninth-place) of the 100 free in 53.55, and took 12th in the 100 fly (1:00.63).

Sarah Litt had the next highest individual performance, when she placed fifth in the 400 IM (4:44.77), while also swimming to ninth in the 200 fly (2:11.71) and 12th in the 200 back (2:11.88).

Desotelle and Anna McGlade each qualified for two championship finals, as Desotelle was sixth in the 200 breaststroke (2:29.41) and seventh in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.31), and McGlade was seventh in both the 200- (1:57.55) and 500 free (5:14.77), and chipped in a 12th in the 100 free (54.04).

The Scots had two other swimmers advance to championships, with Theresa Dunne finishing seventh in the grueling 1650 freestyle (18:33.84), and Kaitlyn Fries coming in eighth-place in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.76). Fries also won the consolation finals of the 200 breast (2:30.33) and picked up 11th-place points in the 200 IM in 2:15.83, while Dunne was 13th in the 400 IM (4:52.49).

Rounding out Wooster's top contributors were Colleen Kill with 10th in the 400 IM (4:50.41), 10th in the 200 fly (2:16.64), and 12th in the 200 IM (2:16.12), Sarah Padrutt with 12th in the 500 free (5:20.84), Caitlin Shea with 13th in both the 200 free (1:59.55) and 500 free (5:22.46), Lena Smith with 14th in the 400 IM (4:53.69), Erin Drake with 15th in the 200 breast (2:36.92) and 16th in the 100 breast (1:10.68), and Holly Hickman with 16th in the 100 back (1:02.16).

The Scots will be off for winter break and return to competition on Jan. 10 with a dual meet at North Coast Athletic Conference foe Ohio Wesleyan University.
