Scots Fall to Nationally-Ranked Spartans in Home Opener

Emma Fikse

The College of Wooster swimming and diving program faced a challenge during its 2015-16 home debut on Friday night, as Case Western Reserve University, ranked among the top-15 nationally, visited Timken Natatorium, and the Fighting Scots acquitted themselves well, with the women's team dropping a close 133-108 decision and the men falling by a 159-78 count.

In the women's meet, first-year Emma Fikse and junior Anna McGlade particularly stood out for Wooster. Fikse won both the 200 freestyle (1:59.61) and 500 free (5:23.98), with sophomore teammate Maggie Layde backing her up via a second-place performance in the former (2:01.40) and McGlade complementing her in second-place in the latter (5:28.32). McGlade took top honors in the 1000 free (11:07.53).

In addition to the distance freestyles, the Scots excelled in the breaststroke. Alexandra Desotelle, Erin Drake, and Abby Blinka all finished within a half second of each other while sweeping the top-three spots in the 100 breast, as Desotelle touched first (1:10.38), then Drake (1:10.61) and Blinka (1:10.73).

Wooster's highlights in the men's meet were provided by brothers Cameron Gelwicks and Conner Gelwicks. They each outraced a Case opponent to the wall down the stretch, with Cameron edging the runner-up in the 200 free 1:47.06 to 1:47.12 and Conner winning the 100 backstroke in similar fashion, 53.50 to 53.78.

The Scots will be right back in action on Saturday, traveling to Hiram College for a tri-meet with the host school and Baldwin Wallace University, starting at 1 p.m.
