School Record, NCAA-Qualifying Score Headline Big Second Day for Scots at Wooster Invitational

Junior Conner Gelwicks improved upon his school-record time in the 100 backstroke, and placed first overall in the event.

Junior Conner Gelwicks continued to improve his school-record 100 backstroke time, and first-year Morgan Day earned her first NCAA diving qualifying score as The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams had a big second day at the Wooster Invitational held at Wooster High School's Ellen Shapiro Natatorium.

On the team side of things, the women jumped up two spots on the leaderboard and sit in third-place with 746 points, trailing national powerhouse Case Western Reserve University (1,042) and Div. II Gannon University (838). On the men's side, Wooster remained seventh with 465.5 points through two days of action. Case Western Reserve (1,159) holds a commanding lead over the men's field.

Gelwicks, who set the 100 back record with a 51.05 split as the leadoff leg of Thursday's 400 medley relay, bettered his time with a 50.92 in prelims before touching first with a NCAA "B" cut clip of 50.75 in the finals. Overall, he is the first male student-athlete at the College to win an individual event at the Wooster Invitational since Peter Parisi in the 100 breaststroke in 2011.

The elder Gelwicks also had an impressive performance in the 100 butterfly, churning out sixth-place honors at 51.56. In prelims, he turned in the fifth-fastest time in College history (51.46).

Across town on the College's campus at the Timken Natatorium, Day had a big day on the one-meter board taking second. Her score of 397.40 met the NCAA Div. III swimming and diving qualifying standard, and marked the third-highest 11-dive score in program history. She needs one more qualifying score this season in order to compete at the NCAA Div. III diving regional competition.

Fellow first-year Emma Fikse doubled up on runner-up honors on Friday night. After a strong showing in the 500 freestyle on Thursday, Fikse touched second in the 200 free (1:55.31), where she was narrowly edged out by Chatham University's Aurelia Sheehan who clocked in at 1:55.24. Fikse's time marked the seventh-fastest in program history.

Wooster's youth continued to shine on the women's side as first-year Abby Blinka turned in a strong performance in the 100 breast placing second at 1:06.77, marking the fourth-fastest time in program history. Seniors Alexandra Desotelle (fourth) and Erin Drake (seventh) combined to give the Fighting Scots 77 points in the event.

Other top-five individual swims were turned in by senior Sarah Litt, who took third in the 400 individual medley at 4:44.70, and first-year Cameron Gelwicks, who touched at 1:43.60 to take fifth in the 200 free, the fourth-fastest time in program history. On the diving boards, rising junior Aaron Salzman placed second with 384.50 points, the sixth-highest point haul in College history.

Fikse teamed with Maggie Layde, Anna McGlade, and Sarah Padrutt for the top relay of the night, as the Scots' 800 free quartet placed fourth.

Wooster's women turned in two more top-10 marks in program history with Layde's time of 51.56 (sixth-fastest) in the 100 fly and junior Theresa Spadola's score of 319.55 (eighth-highest) on the one-meter board.

The Wooster Invitational concludes on Saturday with the prelim session slated for 10 a.m. followed by finals at 5 p.m.
