Scots Kick-Start Season with Top-Four Finishes at Kenyon Relays

The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams turned in strong all-around performances at the season-opening Kenyon College Relays on Saturday afternoon in Gambier, Ohio. The women finished third for the third straight year while the men placed fourth, marking their sixth consecutive top-four showing.

The women finished the afternoon with 82 points, to finish in front of Ohio Wesleyan University and Ohio Northern University who both tied for fourth with 74 points. National powerhouses Denison University and host Kenyon tied for top honors among the eight-team field with 160 points each.

On the men's side, the Scots racked up 74 points to finish behind Denison (164), Kenyon (128), and Ohio Northern (108).

Wooster posted a pair of seventh-place finishes in the 3x500 freestyle relay to highlight the action. On the women's side, Emma Fikse, Anna McGlade, and Maggie Layde teamed up to touch at 16:47.22. In the men's race, Ryan Campbell, Max Koch, and Cameron Gelwicks joined forced to turn in a time of 15:27.52.

Also of note, while only the top-finishing relay from each program counts towards the team score, the women's 3x500 freestyle relay consisting of Sarah Padrutt, Avery Pearson, and Nell Kacmarek weren't far behind the "A" relay, and placed eighth at 17:04.82.

On the women's side, Layde, Alison Hsu, Pearson, and Kalla Sturonas teamed to turn in a seventh-place time of 1:52.82 in the 200 butterfly relay. Other top-nine swims were turned in by the women's 200 breaststroke and 200 freestyle relays.

In the men's meet, Burke Poeting, Griffin Campbell, Michael Crookshanks, and Ryan Campbell touched 10th in the 200 breaststroke relay, while Poeting, Griffin Campbell, Gelwicks, and Aaron Brown were 10th in the 200 freestyle relay.

Wooster hosts Wittenberg University in its first dual meet of the season next Saturday at 1 p.m.
