Wooster Commences Dual Season Schedule with Sweep Over Wittenberg, 125-80 (Men) and 130-92 (Women)

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams opened their 2016-17 dual meet slates with a sweep over Wittenberg University, as the men posted 125 points en route to a 45-point victory while the women topped the Tigers 130-92 on Saturday at Timken Natatorium.

For the men, senior Conner Gelwicks claimed double-winner honors after posting top times in the 200 individual medley (2:07.91) and 100 backstroke (55.42).

Sophomore Cameron Gelwicks led a 1-2-3 Wooster sweep in the 200 freestyle with a winning time of 1:49.38. Behind Gelwicks were sophomore Ryan Campbell (1:50.67) and first-year Trey Schopen (1:53.91).

Campbell claimed an individual win in the 100 free (49.97), followed by a second-place finish from senior Aaron Brown (50.12).

Brown teamed with Conner Gelwicks, Schopen, and sophomore Burke Poeting for a first-place finish in the 200 medley relay (1:41.04).

In the men's 100 butterfly, Schopen (54.15) led a top-three Wooster trio while sophomore Garrett Layde (56.49) and senior Avery Wilson (56.62) finished neck-and-neck for second and third place honors.

Senior Aaron Salzman scored a 197.60 in the one meter diving event.

On the women's side, sophomore Emma Fikse doubled up in the individual win column with first-place times in the 200 free (2:00.88) and 500 free (5:27.42).

Going one-two for the Fighting Scots in the 1000 free were first-year Nell Kacmarek (11:21.13) and senior Anna McGlade (11:38.40).

Senior Lissy de la Chapelle came away with nine points in the 50 free with a first-place time of 26.07.

In the 100 fly, junior Maggie Layde swam a 1:02.27 for top honors, followed closely by second-place sophomore Kalla Sturonas (1:02.95).

First-year Alison Hsu led a Wooster sweep in the 100 back with a 1:02.85, as Kacmarek claimed second (1:05.86) and sophomore Allison Clough finished in third (1:06.76).

The 200 yard medley relay of Hsu, Sturonas, Fikse, and sophomore Abby Blinka finished first with a time of 1:55.07.

The Scots return home next weekend as they get set to host Oberlin College, starting at 1 p.m.
