Scots Rebound with Convincing Sweep Over Hiram

WOOSTER, Ohio - After a challenging battle against Case Western Reserve University the previous night, The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams bounced back with a conclusive victory over Hiram College on Saturday afternoon at Timken Natatorium in what was the final home dual meet of the calendar year for the Fighting Scots.

Wooster's men won 166-57 while the Scots' women's team won by a count of 177-46.

On the men's side, Wooster showcased its depth as nine different student-athletes snagged first-place laurels in individual swimming events, while senior Aaron Salzman met the NCAA Div. III swimming and diving qualifying standard with a score of 437.30 in the one-meter dive. Salzman needs one more qualifying score this season in order to compete at the NCAA Div. III diving regional competition.

The team of Griffin CampbellRyan CampbellCameron Gelwicks, and Burke Poeting opened the men's slate with a winning time of 1:43.63 in the 200 medley relay.

Sophomore Max Koch swam the top time in the 1650 freestyle (17:55.12), followed by a first-place swim from first-year Trey Schopen in the 200 free (1:55.17).

In the 50 backstroke, sophomore Ric Reynolds touched the wall at 26.92 for the fastest clip on the day, while Poeting tallied first-place honors in the 50 breaststroke, clocking in at 29.54.

The Gelwicks brothers claimed three individual wins between the two, as senior Conner Gelwicks took home first place in the 100 butterfly (55.67) and 100 free (50.59), while sophomore Cameron Gelwicks won the 50 free with a time of 22.89 before recording the fastest time in the 50 fly (25.21).

Senior Avery Wilson won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1.00.29.

In other highlights for the men, sophomore Griffin Campbell won the 100 breast (1:05.52) while classmate Ryan Campbell took home first place in the 500 free (5:09.79).

In the 200 free relay, Cameron GelwicksGriffin CampbellRyan Campbell and Garrett Layde recorded the fastest time with a 1:30.67.

On the women's side, Abby Blinka claimed triple-winner status, as the sophomore won first-place honors in her specialty breaststroke events with top times in the 50 (33.45) and 100 (1:14.66) after teaming up with Allison Clough, Emma Fikse, and Kalla Sturonas for a meet-best 1:57.11 in the 200 medley relay.

First-year Alison Hsu won two individual events, starting with the 50 back (30.28) before doubling down with a first-place finish in the 100 back (1:04.57). In addition, Hsu swam the fastest time in the 100 IM with a 1:04.96.

Senior Anna McGlade took top honors in the 1650 free (19:21.14) while first-year Sarah Stutler stole the show in the 200 free (2:10.13). First-year Vienna Howard took home double-winner honors with top times in the 50 free (26.75) and 100 free (58.38).

Other highlights on the women's side include junior Maggie Layde touching first in the 100 fly (1:01.97), while Fikse went the distance for first-place in the 500 free (5:30.15). Sturonas posted the fastest time in the 50 fly (28.52).

In the 200 free relay, the team of senior Lissy de la Chapelle, Jamie Hibbs, Layde and McGlade touched first with a time of 1:47.06.

On the diving end, senior Theresa Spadola finished with a final score of 366.35.

The Scots return to action next weekend at Westminster (Pa.) on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 1 p.m.
