The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams split decisions to Westminster College (Pa.) on Saturday afternoon, as the men fell by a count of 193-100 while the women proved victorious in a 148-145 come-from-behind finish.
On the women's side, three Fighting Scot swimmers – sophomore Emma Fikse, first-year Alison Hsu, and junior Maggie Layde – claimed double-winner honors in swimming events, while senior diver Theresa Spadola won both the 1-meter (207.60) and 3-meter (200.35) diving events.
Fikse paced the 200 freestyle with a winning time of 2:02.16 before doubling down with a win in the 500 free (5:29.12) as Wooster took the lead for good after trailing 109-97 entering the event. Junior Sarah Padrutt (5:33.30) and senior Anna McGlade (5:36.43) finished second and third, respectively, to lead Wooster to a one-two-three sweep in the event.
Meanwhile, Hsu put in top-performances in the 100 backstroke (1:03.8) and 200 back (2:15.40), an event in which she edged out Westminster's Anne Tillie by 28 hundreths-of-a-seconds, while Layde won the 200 butterfly (2:14.6) by six hundreths-of-a-second before winning the 100 free (56.63) by an even narrower margin of one hundreth-of-a-second.
Finishing up the individual winners in the swimming events was sophomore Kalla Sturonas, who took home the 100 fly with a time of 1:01.43.
In the men's competition, senior diver Aaron Salzman won both the 1-meter (232.25) and 3-meter (232.25) diving events, while first-year Trey Schopen tallied Wooster's sole blue ribbon in swimming competition with a 2:02.11 in the 200 fly. Schopen followed up his victorious 200 fly performance with a second-place time of 53.91 in the 100 fly – finishing less than four tenths-of-a-second behind Westminster's Brad Kolesar.
Senior Conner Gelwicks tallied two second-place finishes in the 100 back (56.28) and 200 back (2:03.42). Sophomores Cameron Gelwicks (1:49.14) and Ryan Campbell (1:50.67) took second and third place respectively in the 200 free, while senior Aaron Brown (22.85) and sophomore Burke Poeting (22.91) claimed second- and third-place finishes in the 50 free.
The Scots return to action on Dec. 1 as part of the three-day Wooster Invitational, which splits sites between Wooster High School (swimming) and Timken Natatorium (diving).
