Diving Strength, Freestyle Depth Showcase Themselves as Scots End Day Two of Wooster Invitational on Strong Note

WOOSTER, Ohio –The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams continued to illustrate their respective depth on Friday evening, particularly in the diving and freestyle events, as both squads continued competition at this weekend's Wooster Invitational held jointly at Ellen Shapiro Natatorium (Wooster High School) and Timken Natatorium at The College of Wooster campus.

On the men's side, current school-record holder in the 200 freestyle, Cameron Gelwicks, led a trio of Fighting Scots in the event, as the sophomore garnered third-place honors with a time 1:42.72, while teammates Ryan Campbell (1:44.86) and Max Koch (1:44.97) turned in strong showings in the consolation final with 11th- and 12th-place finishes. Koch's race in the finals marked a .72 improvement upon his career-best, placing him eighth in the program's top-10 annals.

Senior Anna McGlade ended the day with two top-eight finishes, one coming in the 200 freestyle while the second came as part of Wooster 800 freestyle relay, which placed third. 

Switching over to the women, sophomore Emma Fikse (1:55.78) closed out the 200 free with a photo finish, missing out on first-place honors by one hundredth-of-a-second to lead a triad of top-eight Wooster finishers, as senior Anna McGlade (1:59.29) and junior Sarah Padrutt (1:59.92) closed out the championship final, placing seventh and eighth respectively.

As for the team standings, both Wooster programs remain in fifth place overall after entering the day in the same position, with the men standing at 661.5 points and the women at 690. Case Western Reserve University leads both genders, with the men at 1061 points while the women top the standings with 1137. On the men's side, Westminster College (869) remains in second, followed by third-place Div. II Gannon University (814), while Div. II Edinboro University (922) and Westminster (757) stand in second- and third-place, respectively, on the women's end.

In the men's 3-meter diving event, senior Aaron Salzman garnered a first-place finish with a final score of 342.75. On the women's slate, senior Theresa Spadola (344) and sophomore Morgan Day (338.75) closed the day with fourth- and fifth-place finishes respectively in the 1-meter diving board.

Keeping with the women, Wooster's 200 medley relay squad of Alison Hsu, Rachel Mandel, Kalla Sturonas, and Jamie Hibbs clocked in a sixth-place time of 1:51.79 to initiate Friday's finals events.

Hsu, a first-year, followed up the relay with a seventh-place swim (4:52.78) in the 400 IM, while Sturonas rounded out the championship heat in the 100 butterfly with a 59.49 to better her prelims time by two tenths-of-a-second.

Matching the women's finish in the men's 200 medley relay were Conner Gelwicks, Griffin Campbell, Trey Schopen, and Aaron Brown, who clocked in at 1:35.59 to finish in sixth-place.

Gelwicks followed up the relay with a fifth-place time in the 100 backstroke, as the senior and current school-record holder hit the wall at 52.70.

Closing out the day in stellar fashion were Wooster's 800 free relay teams, as both teams nabbed third-place finishes. In the women's race, Fikse, McGlade, Padrutt, and Maggie Layde hit the wall at 8:01.16, while Cameron Gelwicks, Ryan Campbell, Max Koch, and Conner Gelwicks clocked in a time of 6:58.35 to earn top-three honors on the men's side.

The action concludes on Saturday with the prelim session schedule for 10 a.m., the diving session at 2 p.m., and the final session at 5 p.m.
