Scots Combine for 11 Top-Five Finishes on Final Day of Wooster Invitational

Garrett Layde (pictured here during Thursday's 200 individual medley prelims) won the 200 butterfly in impressive fashion by overtaking a fellow competitor with under 50 yards to go, and then holding a second one off over the final 25 yards.

WOOSTER, Ohio – Sophomore Garrett Layde chased down one competitor and held off a second over the final 50 yards of the 200 butterfly to win the event with a 1:53.27 to headline the third day of the Wooster Invitational held at Ellen Shapiro Natatorium and The College of Wooster's Timken Natatorium.

A few minutes earlier, older sister Maggie Layde was equally impressive in the women's 200 butterfly, as the junior gradually worked her way from sixth- to second-place, hitting the deck at 2:09.98.

Wooster's other signature moment came in the men's 400 freestyle relay as sophomore Cameron Gelwicks, senior Conner Gelwicks, Layde, and Ryan Campbell cruised to a win in their heat, and captured fourth-place overall with a 3:07.72, just over a second over the school-record pace set back in 2000.

In the final standings, Wooster remained in fifth-place in both genders, and both squads topped the 1,000-point plateaus as the women had 1,032 points and the men scored 1,009.50 points.

Case Western Reserve University won the team title in both genders with the women's scoring 1,846.50 points, and the men accumulating 1,618 points. Div. II Edinboro University (1,265.5 points) and Westminster College (1,149) points rounded out the top three on the women's side, while Westminster (1,215 points) and Div. II Gannon University (1,206) earned top-three finishes on the men's side.

Wooster's freestyle depth continued to lead the way throughout the night on the women's side as the Fighting Scots turned in three of the top nine finishers in the grueling 1,650 freestyle. Junior Sarah Padrutt led the way taking fifth, while lowering her career-best time to 18:12.08, the ninth-fastest in program history. Freshman Nell Kacmarek and senior Anna McGlade backed that up with times of 18:33.12 and 18:42.67 respectively, marks that were good for seventh- and ninth-place.

Sticking with the women, Alison Hsu earned a championship heat start in the 200 backstroke, and went on to shave over four seconds off of her prelim swim en route to fifth-place honors at 2:10.98. Notable, the freshman's time marked the ninth-best clip in the program annals.

Switching back to the freestyle events, sophomore Emma Fikse delivered her third top-five finish of the meet with a fifth-place effort (53.76) in the 100 freestyle.

In the final relay, Fikse, senior Jamie Hibbs, freshman Avery Pearson, and Layde teamed up to turn in a 3:38.22 to take fifth in the 400 freestyle.

Across town, senior Aaron Salzman led the way for the men in the diving well, doubling-up on first-place honors with a score of 391.90 on the one-meter board, after winning the three-meter competition on Friday. On the women's side, classmate Theresa Spadola took fourth-place on the three-meter board with a score of 323.45 points.

In the men's individual swimming events, senior backstroke specialist Conner Gelwicks delivered a fourth-place time (1:54.45) in the 200-yard race.

Not to be outdone was younger brother Cameron Gelwicks who hit the deck in a blistering 47.08 in the finals of the 100 freestyle to place fifth, and move past older brother Conner for the fifth-fastest time in the event in program history.

Earlier in the day, distance specialist Max Koch navigated the 1,650 freestyle in 16:58.68, a time that held up for eighth in the event.

Other 10th-place individual finishes were turned in by Kacmarek (200 backstroke, 2:13.35), freshman Eli Samuelson (200 backstroke, 1:58.05), and sophomore Kalla Sturonas (200 butterfly, 2:15.93).

Wooster returns to action with a 5:30 p.m. dual meet at the University of Mount Union on Friday, Jan. 13.
