Wooster Splits Decisions at Allegheny in Final Tune-Up Before NCAC Championships

The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams split decisions at Allegheny College on Saturday afternoon, with the women winning, 164-132, while the men lost, 136-135, in a finish that came down to the final event – the 200 yard freestyle relay.

On the women's side, the quartet for Lissy de la Chapelle, Rachel Mandel, Maggie Layde and Jamie Hibbs took first-place in the 200 yard medley relay to commence the meet, hitting the wall at 1:58.45, just .29 seconds ahead of Wooster's second-place team.

Senior Anna McGlade won the 1000 meter freestyle with a time of 11:15.49, followed by first-year Nell Kacmarek's second-place time of 11:19.82. Sophomore Emma Fikse claimed triple-winner honors with winning times in the 100 freestyle (54.88) and 200 freestyle (1:56.71) to go along with her participation in the winning 200 freestyle relay squad of Layde, Avery Pearson and Jamie Hibbs, as they concluded the meet with a first-place time of 1:43.36, just .38 seconds ahead of second-place Allegheny.

Layde, who also claimed three wins on the day, marked her third win in the 200 butterfly, hitting the wall at 2:15.59. Sophomore Allison Clough claimed two wins in her specialty stroke – the breaststroke – with first-place times in the 100- (1:15.08) and 200-yard races (2:41.47).

First-year Alison Hsu rounded out the Fighting Scot winners, taking first-place honors in the 400 individual medley (4:56.21).

On the men's side, Wooster entered the final event – the 200 freestyle relay – leading 129-125. In a decision that came down to .53 seconds, Allegheny claimed first-place, and 11 points, while Wooster garnered second- and third-place honors for six total points.

Six individuals claimed first-place honors, starting with sophomore Ryan Campbell's winning effort in the 200 freestyle (1:47.79). In the 100 backstroke, senior Conner Gelwicks hit the wall at 54.69 for first-place, while sophomore Garrett Layde led a 1-2-3 Wooster sweep in the 200 butterfly with a winning time of 2:03.27.

In the one-meter diving competition, senior Aaron Salzman recorded a six-dive score of 179.47. First-years Eli Samuelson and Trey Schopen tallied individual first-place prizes, with Samuelson taking the 200 backstroke in 2:02.84 while Schopen claimed the 100 butterfly in 53.49.

Up next for the Scots is the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, which takes place at Denison University in Granville, Ohio on Feb. 8-11, with preliminary heats beginning at 10 a.m. Thursday-through-Saturday followed by final heats at 6 p.m.
