Women Place Third, Men Fifth at Season-Opening Kenyon Relays

The College of Wooster swimming and diving teams opened the 2017-18 campaign at the Kenyon Relays on Saturday afternoon in Gambier, Ohio, with the women placing third and the men fifth out of the nine-team pool.

The women, who garnered 54 points behind winner Kenyon College (124) and runner-up Denison University (112), totaled five top-eight finishes and nine top-10 claims.

In the 200-yard freestyle relay, the quartet of junior Emma Fikse, first-year Lexi Riley-DiPaolo, first-year Brooke Brown and first-year Anne Bowers took seventh-place with a time a 1:43.00.

Other top-eight events included the 200 breaststroke, with junior Rachel Mandel, first-year Kera Sells, sophomore Alison Hsu and Browne claiming eighth (2:17.54).

In the 3x500-yard free, three Fighting Scot trios recorded top-eight times, led by a fifth-place showing from senior Sarah Padrutt, Fikse, and Riley-DiPaolo (16:40.65).

On the men's side, the Scots totaled one top-eight finish and four top-12 claims overall to finish with 36 points.

Wooster's seventh-place claim came via the 3x500 free, with the junior trio of Ryan Campbell, Max Koch and Cameron Gelwicks finishing in 15:19.05.

Juniors Griffin Campbell, Michael Crookshanks, and Garrett Layde along with first-year Craig Klumpp took 11th-place in the 200 breast while Gelwicks, Griffin Campbell, Ryan Campbell and first-year Wyatt Foss matched that with a 11th-place showing in the 200 free (1:29.43).

In the mixed 200 yard medley, which included two members from both the men's and women's programs, Wooster took home fifth-place honors, as first-year Michelle Sayre, Griffin Campbell, first-year Leah Jorn and Ryan Campbell hit the wall at 1:46.53, just .14 seconds back from a top-four claim.

Up next, Wooster hosts Wittenberg University, Oberlin College and Ursuline College for a quad-meet on Oct. 28 at 1 p.m., with swimming events scheduled to take place at Wooster High School and diving events at Timken Natatorium.
