Women in Fourth Place, Men Sixth After Day One of Wooster Invitational

WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's and women's swimming and diving teams kicked off the 2017 Wooster Invitational with a combined four top-five individual finishes and three top-five relays on Thursday evening at Ellen Shapiro Natatorium at Wooster High School.

With two days remaining, the women stand in fourth place out of 11 teams with 305 points while the men stand in sixth place out of 11 with 273. Case Western Reserve University leads both sides, with 502.5 on the women's side and 486 on the men's.

First-year Lexi Riley-DiPaolo won her heat in the 500-yard freestyle and finished with the fourth-fastest time in the event.

Led by junior Emma Fikse's second-place time in the 500-yard freestyle (5:11.63), four female swimmers logged top-nine individual times.

Also placing in the top heat of the 500 free was senior Sarah Padrutt, who clocked in at 5:17.29, just .07 seconds faster than her preliminary time for a fourth-place overall finish.

Continuing with another impressive time in the 500 free was first-year Lexi Riley-DiPaolo, who won the B-heat with a time of 5:15.75 after posting a 5:20.60 in the prelims. Riley-DiPaolo's finals time stood as the fourth-fastest overall.

In the 200 individual medley, sophomore Alison Hsu came from behind to win the B-heat with a time of 2:13.14. Classmate Avery Pearson followed in 15th at 2:16.43, while Hsu's time ended up standing as the seventh-fastest finals time.

The Fighting Scots women finished top-five in two relays – the 400 medley and 200 free. In the medley, the quartet of Fikse, first-year Hannah Langer, junior Rachel Mandel, and first-year Anne Bowers hit the wall at 4:05.46. As for the 200 free, Fikse, Riley-DiPaolo, senior Maggie Layde, and first-year Brooke Brown went 1:39.48, just .09 seconds back of fourth-place.

On the men's side, juniors Griffin Campbell and Cameron Gelwicks recorded respective fifth-place individual finishes in addition to junior Ryan Campbell's sixth-place finish and junior Garrett Layde's ninth-place time.

Griffin Campbell went 21.55 in the 50 free and Gelwicks hit the wall in the 200 IM at 1:57.30 as part of an overall tight race, with .41 seconds separating the fourth- through eighth-place championship heat finishers.

Ryan Campbell went the distance in the 500 free, clocking in at 4:45.16 while Layde won the B-heat in the 200 IM at 1:56.49.

Highlighting the men's relay outings was the 200 free's third-place finish, as the quartet of Gelwicks, Griffin Campbell, Layde, and Ryan Campbell went 1:24.36, just .16 behind the first-place team from Westminster College.

Wooster's other top-10 relay claim came in the 400 medley, as Griffin Campbell, Gelwicks, junior Ric Reynolds, and sophomore Trey Schopen placed eighth in 3:32.07, just .01 seconds behind the seventh-place team and .03 ahead of the ninth-place team.

On Friday, preliminary races begin at 10 a.m., with final heats slated to start at 6 p.m. Additionally, diving events will take place at Timken Natatorium.
