Wooster Makes Quick Work of Malone in Dual Meet Opener

Tucker Andrewjeski, Wooster swimming & diving WOOSTER, Ohio – The College of Wooster men's swimming and diving team won all but one event, while the Fighting Scots' women easily coasted to a 23rd consecutive dual meet win on Saturday afternoon. The Scots' men downed Malone University 230.5-57.5, while the women had the top three finishers in six events en route to a 202-58 victory.

The podium sweeps started early for Wooster, as junior Ollie Bream (2:00.08), sophomore Bailey Nickols (2:07.75), and junior Mariam Zayour (2:08.58) claimed the top three spots in the 200 freestyle. In the 100 breaststroke, it was junior Izzy Bellefleur (1:12.53), junior Vicky Maumbe (1:17.01), and junior Abbey Quick (1:21.07) occupying the top positions, and that was again the order in the 200 breaststroke, with the trio touching at 2:37.94, 2:54.35, and 2:55.49, respectively.

Elsewhere, junior JP Timken's 2:27.87 led off the podium sweep in the 200 butterfly, and that effort was backed up by first-year Molly Sterrett's 2:33.90 and first-year Lilly Borquist-Williams' 2:43.22. Junior Hallie Findlan led the top-three Wooster contingent in the 100 freestyle at 56.16 and senior Emma Connors and sophomore Keara Wiley followed with times of 58.37 and 59.06, respectively. Wooster's final top-three sweep came in the 200 individual medley, where Zayour (2:23.23), Bellefleur (2:26.99), and first-year Becca Murray (2:27.01) had the top times.

First-year Tara McGovern, senior Maddie Becker, Bream, and Findlan won the 200 medley relay at 1:54.19, while Bream, Wiley, Becker, and Findlan capped the meet with the winning time of 3:49.78 in the 400 freestyle relay. Becker's 25.19 earned the top spot in the 50 freestyle, as did Bream's 1:01.20 in the 100 butterfly. Junior Cady Eakins won the one-meter diving competition with 126.55 points.

Wooster's men swept the top three spots in five events, starting with the 200 butterfly, where junior Isaac Shaker went 2:03.23, with that time followed by sophomore Matt Kaley's 2:09.50 and senior Garrett Morris' 2:17.97. Next, sophomore Leo Edmonds-Doberenz's 208.80 points on the one-meter diving board was followed by first-year Chris Caldwell's 191.70 and sophomore Blu Catanzaro's 187.50. Later, junior Tucker Andrewjeski stopped the watch at 5:09.53 in the 500 freestyle, with sophomore Callum Glover earning runner-up honors at 5:13.03. Junior Andre Yazhbin went 5:23.35 to complete the top-three sweep.

Wooster's 500 freestyle sweep marked the first of three straight swimming events the Scots claimed all top-three spots. Senior Josh Pearson won the 100 butterfly at 54.38, with first-year Ethan Neuner (56.40) and junior Max Likins (57.58) coming in next. Andrewjeski returned to win the 200 individual medley at 2:05.27, while sophomore Boston Sullivan (2:05.84) and Kaley (2:14.89) rounded out the top-three finishers.

Other individual winners included Andrewjeski (100 breaststroke, 1:03.81), sophomore Flynn Cowie (50 freestyle, 22.79), Edmonds-Doberenz (three-meter diving, 213.65 points), Glover (200 freestyle, 1:51.31), Likins (100 backstroke, 56.96), Pearson (1,000 freestyle, 10:48.26), Shaker (200 backstroke, 2:07.59), and Sullivan (200 breaststroke, 2:21.16).

Sophomore Will Laymon led off Wooster's winning 200 medley relay, with junior Nathan Ferrence, Sullivan, and Glover following for a winning time of 1:40.80. In the 400 freestyle relay, Pearson, Gross, Neuner, and Glover touched first at 3:20.42.

Next, Wooster competes at the University of Mount Union at 1 p.m. on Saturday, November 4.
