Senior Salute: Josh Pearson

Josh Pearson Q&A Throughout the spring semester, we are honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Josh Pearson, a mathematics major from Cincinnati, Ohio. Pearson is a member of the swimming and diving team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: I chose Wooster because I really liked the people I met on my recruiting visits.

Q: What does being a Fighting Scot student-athlete mean to you?
A: Being a Fighting Scot means having the chance to compete at the collegiate level and be a part of a team while still focusing academics.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: My favorite memories are definitely winning the Wooster Invitational as a sophomore and the team finishing third at the 2023 North Coast Athletic Conference Championships for the program's highest finish since 2003.

Q: What is the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: The best part is being able to pursue athletic goals without sacrificing academic achievement and outside interests.

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am a representative for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, worked as an AMRE (Applied Methods and Research Experience) associate over the summer, and have worked as a mathematics tutor.

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Dr. Pamela Pierce in the Mathematics department has had a great impact on me here at Wooster. Her classes have been very interesting for me and challenged me in good ways. She always encouraged students to explore applications and questions outside the bounds of our class and curriculum. She was also always available when I had questions or needed help.

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people and resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: All of my professors have been super helpful, especially Dr. Pamela Pierce, who I took a number of classes with. She has been very encouraging and always willing answer my questions when I ask. Coach Rob Harrington has also provided me with the opportunity to compete for the Fighting Scots, for which I am very grateful.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My Independent Study focuses on concussions in the NFL. I am conducting a statistical analysis to determine common characteristics of players who get concussions and use predictive modeling to determine how many games a concussed player will miss.

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: I worked as an AMRE associate last summer, which was a great opportunity for me to work with my advisors, Dr. Michael Bush and Dr. Colby Long, as well as my teammates, both from Wooster and Ashesi University in Ghana. This was a very enriching experience for me both personally and academically.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what advice would you give your first-year self?
A: Take every opportunity to experience new things and make new friends.
