The College of Wooster track & field teams squared off
against a competitive field while participating in their sixth meet
of the 2008 season, as the Fighting Scot men placed fifth of eight
teams and the women eighth of nine teams while taking part in
Friday’s Greater Cleveland Championships hosted by
Baldwin-Wallace College.
On the men’s side, Bryan Ablani was quite successful in the
55 meter hurdles, setting a new Wooster record with a time of 7.84,
nipping Dierre Taylor’s time of 7.85 set back in 2006.
Teammate Matt Jensen took fourth in the same event (8.16).
The tandem of Tristan Jordan and Eric Dyer found success in the
triple jump. Jordan, the 2007 champion at the same meet, again took
home top honors while Dyer placed third in leaps of 43 feet, 5
inches and 42 feet, 9.75 inches. In that same event, Averell Gatton
and Ramses Clements wound up fourth and fifth with jumps of 41
feet, 5 inches and 40 feet, 8.75 inches. Additionally, Jordan
placed fifth in the long jump (20 feet, 6.25 inches) and Gatton
took home eighth (19 feet, 3.25 inches).
Jon Mathis continues to have a strong indoor season, placing third
in the high jump (6 feet, 1.25 inches), while Gatton cleared 5
feet, 9.25 inches for fourth. William Setliff finished in seventh
in the 500 meter run (1:11.66), and Paul Thompson finished seventh
in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:54.36.
Other top performances include Robert McConnell, clearing the bar
in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 6 inches for fourth
place, while Steve Zumbrun took fifth in the shot put with a throw
of 45 feet, 7.75 inches.
The women’s best performance of the evening came when Katie
Dale placed third in the shot put, recording a distance of 35
feet, 9.25 inches. Also adding a top-five finish was Elizabeth
Wardrop, who took fifth in the high jump (4 feet, 8.75 inches),
while teammate Sarah Wiswell was seventh in the pole vault (8 feet,
6.25 inches).
Also of note, Jessica Yarmosky took seventh in the 1,000-meter run
(3:20.27).
Wooster will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 29 and Saturday,
March 1, when it heads to fellow North Coast Athletic Conference
institution Denison University to compete in the North Coast
Athletic Conference championships.
