Albani Sets School Record, Scots Compete at Greater Cleveland Championships

The College of Wooster track & field teams squared off against a competitive field while participating in their sixth meet of the 2008 season, as the Fighting Scot men placed fifth of eight teams and the women eighth of nine teams while taking part in Friday’s Greater Cleveland Championships hosted by Baldwin-Wallace College.

On the men’s side, Bryan Ablani was quite successful in the 55 meter hurdles, setting a new Wooster record with a time of 7.84, nipping Dierre Taylor’s time of 7.85 set back in 2006. Teammate Matt Jensen took fourth in the same event (8.16).

The tandem of Tristan Jordan and Eric Dyer found success in the triple jump. Jordan, the 2007 champion at the same meet, again took home top honors while Dyer placed third in leaps of 43 feet, 5 inches and 42 feet, 9.75 inches. Additionally, Jordan placed fifth in the long jump (20 feet, 6.25 inches) and Gatton took home eighth (19 feet, 3.25 inches).

Jon Mathis continues to have a strong indoor season, placing third in the high jump (6 feet, 1.25 inches), while Gatton cleared 5 feet, 9.25 inches for fourth. William Setliff finished in seventh in the 500 meter run (1:11.66), and Paul Thompson finished seventh in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:54.36.

Other top performances include Robert McConnell, clearing the bar in the pole vault with a height of 12 feet, 6 inches for fourth place, while Steve Zumbrun took fifth in the shot put with a throw of 45 feet, 7.75 inches.

The women’s best performance of the evening came when Katie Dale placed third in the shot put, recording a distance of 35 feet, 9.25 inches. Also adding a top-five finish was Elizabeth Wardrop, who took fifth in the high jump (4 feet, 8.75 inches), while teammate Sarah Wiswell was seventh in the pole vault (8 feet, 6.25 inches).

Also of note, Jessica Yarmosky took seventh in the 1,000-meter run (3:20.27).

Wooster will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 29 and Saturday, March 1, when it heads to fellow North Coast Athletic Conference institution Denison University to compete in the North Coast Athletic Conference championships.
