The College of Wooster kicked off the 2014 track & field season in impressive fashion Friday, setting two school records and sweeping fellow North Coast Athletic Conference foe Oberlin College in a dual with the men winning 91-43 and the women 96-53 inside the Scot Center.

It took just one collegiate meet for Fighting Scot freshman high jumper Mark Stair to break a 36-year old school record, as he cleared 6 feet, 7.5 inches to win the event. The former mark was shared by Ron Auston and Chris Thomas at 6 feet, 6 inches, both achieving that mark way back in 1978.

While it was not as old of a record, sophomore Matt Margida was equally impressive, recording a new standard in the weight throw by more than three feet. Margida's first-place effort reached 42 feet, 9.75 inches in passing up Josh Kime (39 feet, 6 inches; 2011) on Wooster's ledger.

Stair and Margida were part of a dominant effort by the Scots' men's team, as it produced winners in 11 of the 14 events. Margida was a double winner, adding a first-place in the shot put (43 feet, 5 inches), while also in the field teammate Mamoudou N'Diaye took first in the long jump (19 feet, 6.25 inches) and Zach Towner in the triple jump (37 feet, 11.25 inches).

On the track, Ben Kingstone sprinted his way to a win in the 60 meters (7.38), John Lanz crossed first in the 300 (40.75), David Brew led the way in the 500 (1:08.54), and Alex Chabraja paced nine competitors in the 3000 (9:18.25), while Coner Maley scored in the 60-meter hurdles (10.85).

In the women's meet, Wooster's versatile sophomore Hilary Coady notched victories in both the 60 hurdles (10.01) and shot put (28 feet, 10.25 inches). Ashley Huddson was triumphant in the 500 meters (1:22.69) and Lauren Buyan was part of a rare tie in the 1000 (3:14.50).

The Scots won four additional field events, Amy French in the triple jump (31 feet, 4.50 inches), Kendra Shehy in the high jump (4 feet, 11.50 inches), Kristina Reck in the pole vault (8 feet, 6 inches), and Devin Johns in the weight throw (30 feet, 4.25 inches).

Next Saturday, Wooster will host a more traditional multi-team meet, the NCAC Quad, inside the Scot Center, starting at noon.
