Wooster Records Five First-Place Finishes as Men Second, Women Fourth at Fighting Scots Invitational

Jarrett Art placed second in the long jump, and later went on to capture first in the 200 meters.

The College of Wooster men's track & field team was right there with Wittenberg University, finishing nine points behind the Tigers on the men's side, while the women's squad nearly matched a school record, and placed fourth at the Fighting Scots Invitational on Saturday afternoon at Wooster, Ohio.

On the men's side, Wittenberg (131 points) and Wooster (123 points) separated themselves from the pack with Denison University (74 points), Oberlin College (72 points), and Kenyon College (30 points) rounding out the field. On the women's side, Wittenberg (115 points) recorded a close five-point win over Denison with Oberlin (98 points), Wooster (88 points), and Kenyon (80 points) rounding out the team scores.

Carolyn Webster headlined the results clearing 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump (currently tied for 15th in Div. III), one-inch shy of matching Abena Boamah-Acheampong's school record, and two inches better than Saturday's clearances turned in by Denison standouts Aedin Brennan and Hannah Hall. The Scots' talented first-year went on to win the long jump, with a mark of 17 feet, 3.25 inches, 7.5 inches better than the runner-up leap turned in by Oberlin.

Wooster's youth also led the way in the men's meet, while numerous veterans complemented the first-years with key performances.

Jarrett Art dashed his way to first in the 200 meters crossing at 24.06, edging out a Wittenberg competitor by six-hundredths of a second. In the field events, the first-year added runner-up honors in the long jump, leaping 20 feet, 7 inches, nearly a foot better than the third-place distance.

Staying in the field, senior Matt Margida won the shot put (44 feet, 11 inches), while first-year John Petrecca captured first in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches).

Wooster also had a strong showing in the mid-distance and distance events with junior Blake Pecoraro taking second in the 3,000 meters (9:23.40), first-years Simon Weyer and Brian Lief placing third and fourth respectively in the 800 meters with times of 2:08.41 and 2:08.56, and Lief adding a fourth-place time of 4:34.20 in the mile.

Other notable performances included Tyler Catlin's third-place heave of 45 feet, 7.25 inches in the weight throw, Christian Golden's fourth-place long jump of 19 feet, 3.5 inches, and the 4x200 relay consisting of Art, Ben Kingstone, Thomas McGrath, and Cody Park who clocked in at 1:36.10, just 11 hundredths of a second off of the second-place time turned in by Denison. Of note, Catlin's weight throw distance was the top non-uattached mark of the day.

In the women's meet senior Hilary Coady continued to showcase rapid improvement in the shot put, with a career-best toss of 35 feet, 9.25 inches. Coady added second-place honors in the 60-meter hurdles (9.59) and teamed with Julia Higgins, Emani Kelley, and Paris Nahas to finish second in the 4x400 relay (4:13.14).

Other top contributors towards the women's team score were Taryn Szalay with a second-place showing in the 200 meters (28.01), Mackenzie Kellar with a third-place time of 2:34.32 in the 800 meters, and Kelley with a four-place time of 1:04.29 in the 400 meters.

Wooster will be back in action at the Bob Shannon Invitational in Granville, Ohio next weekend.
