Three individual winners – all coming on the men's side – and the winning relay in the women's 4x400 headlined this weekend's action as The College of Wooster track and field programs finished up competition at the Kenyon Classic on Saturday evening, with the men placing third with 79 points and the women fourth with 73 points.
Sophomore Jacob Denbeaux won the men's 3,000 meters with a clip of 9:02.73, while classmate Jackson Feinknopf made it a one-two finish by claiming second-place with a time of 9:12.27.
In the 800, sophomore Brian Lief came away with first-place honors after nearly breaking the two-minute mark, clocking in at 2:00.41 and almost three seconds ahead of the closest competitor.
Rounding out the blue-ribbon winners on the men's slate was sophomore Jack Petrecca, who won the high jump at a height of 6 feet, 2.75 inches. Reed Crocker of Kenyon and Drew Campbell of Wittenberg tied Petrecca at that height, but Petrecca won due to fewer total faults after having cleared each previous height on his first attempt.
In the 60-meter hurdles, sophomore Jordan Dennis lowered his own school record en route to a third-place finish, crossing the line at 8.84.
The men's 4x200 relay consisting of Dennis, Justin Fox, Nick Lines and Austin Hamlett scored second with a third-best time of 1:36.87. Hamlett represented the lone Scot in the open 400, finishing in fourth with a time of 52.55, while junior Geoffrey Carney-Knisely posted a fourth-place time in the 5,000 (16:58.89).
Other scoring contributors included David Westcott in the men's mile (4:53.76), Dennis in the triple jump (36 feet, 7 inches), and the 4x400 relay team of Hamlett, Petrecca, Lines and Myles Parker, which finished fifth with a clip of 3:42.77.
Meanwhile, the Fighting Scot throwers traveled north for the Greater Cleveland Championships hosted at the Lou Higgins Recreation Center on the campus of Baldwin Wallace University. Coming away with a scoring throw was first-year Spencer Wilson, who placed sixth in the shot put with a best-throw of 41 feet, 8.5 inches.
In women's action, capping the meet was the first-place 4x400 relay team of Regan Szalay, Julia Higgins, Emani Kelley, and Mackenzie Kellar, as they bested the field with a time of 4:17.33.
In the field events, first-year Summer Robinson leaped to a second-place finish in the high jump, highlighting a trio of Wooster scorers as junior Elizabeth Obi claimed fifth (4 feet, 7 inches) and senior Taryn Szalay finishing in sixth at 4 feet, 5 inches. In the women's long jump, the Scots' trio of Katie Cameron, Taryn Szalay, and Obi finished in succession, with Cameron leading at 14 feet, 2.50 inches for fifth-place, followed by Szalay at sixth at 13 feet, 11.75 inches and Obi at seventh with a jump of 13 feet, 11 inches.
Headling the Scots' distance efforts was senior Emily Reid, who turned in a second-place time of 19:44.74 in the 5,000 meters. Also placing second was the women's 4x200 relay, as the quartet of first-years Korri Palmer and Regan Szalay and seniors Dyese Osaze and Taryn Szalay posted a time of 1:52.32.
In the 60-meter hurdles, Taryn Szalay represented the lone Scot, claiming fourth-place with a time of 9.72, while in the open 400, sister Regan Szalay also finished fourth, crossing the finish at 1:02.60, just .54 seconds out of a top-three time.
Rounding out scoring contributors for the women include sophomore Cobi Warstler in the 800 (2:29.14), sophomore Sophie Hawkins in the 3,000 (12:0702), sophomore Mallory Crane in the triple jump (30 feet, 3.75 inches).
Wooster hosts the North Coast Athletic Conference Heptathlon/Pentathlon competition next weekend, Feb. 25-26, at the Scot Center, and will travel to Oberlin College for the NCAC Indoor Championships to following weekend, March 3-4.
