The College of Wooster track and field programs had themselves a stellar outing at the Kenyon College Invitational, as eight combined first-place finishes – including three by first-year Akwia Tilton – led the Fighting Scots to a first-place team finish for the men and a runner-up ending for the women on Saturday afternoon at Wilder Track in Gambier, Ohio.
The men finished first of seven teams with 146.5 points, just 8.5 ahead of runner-up Wittenberg University while the women finished comfortably in second-place with 112. Oberlin College claimed first-place on the women's side with 261 points.
Having herself a day, particularly in the short sprints, was Tilton, who claimed first-place in the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 9.75 inches before clocking in winning times of 12.72 in the 100 meters and 26.35 in the 200. Of note, Tilton's closest competitor in the 100, Emily Kelly of Oberlin, finished nearly .20 seconds behind Tilton.
Senior Katie Cameron followed Tilton in the long jump with a third-place leap of 16 feet, 3 inches. Wrapping up top-three finishes in the jumps were junior Elizabeth Obi in the high jump (4 feet, 9 inches) and sophomore Mallory Crane in the triple jump (33 feet, 7.50 inches).
In the open 400, first-year Regan Szalay clocked in at 1:01.87 to claim second-place while older sister Taryn Szalay went 16.58 in the 100 hurdles to finish in third-place.
In the throwing events, senior Paige Fabry threw to sixth- and eighth-place finishes in the shot put (32 feet, 8.25 inches) and hammer throw (93 feet, 2 inches), respectively, while sophomore Kassady Murphy claimed sixth-place in the hammer (109 feet, 7 inches).
In the 4x400 relay, the quartet of Kellar, Regan Szalay, Tilton, and sophomore Emani Kelley finished in second-place with a time of 4:09.43.
On the men's side, all five of the Scots' first-place finishes were claimed by sophomores. In the long jump, sophomore Jarret Art led a trio of scoring Scots with a winning leap of 21 feet, .50 inches.
In the high jump, sophomore Jack Petrecca went 6 feet, 2.75 inches for top honors.
Sophomore David Westcott (9:47.90) and classmate Jacob Denbeaux (4:10.65) each finished first in their respective events, with Westcott competing in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and Denbeaux in the 1500. In addition, sophomore Brian Lief broke the two-minute mark to finish first in the 800 with a time of 1:58.34.
Wrapping up the top-place Scots was the 4x100 team of sophomore Jordan Dennis, first-year Austin Hamlett, sophomore Antonio Bailey and sophomore Justin Fox, who put in a winning clip of 44.47.
First-year Spencer Wilson claimed second-place in the discus throw (133 feet). Meanwhile, in the sprints, Hamlett finished third in the 400 (51.28) and fifth in the 200 (23.26), while Fox claimed fourth-place in the 100 (11.60).
