The College of Wooster track and field programs opened the first day of the North Coast Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships on Friday at Greencastle, Ind., as the women closed day one with one all-conference performance in the books to stand in fourth-place with 21 points, while the men's two scoring performances has them in ninth-place heading into Saturday's closing events.
On the women's side, Oberlin College leads the eight-team field with 95 points, followed by Ohio Wesleyan University (70.5) and Kenyon (25). On the men's side, Ohio Wesleyan tops the nine-team field with 68 points while Wabash trails closely with 66, followed by Allegheny's third-place total of 40.
For the women, sophomore Carolyn Webster tied a career-best in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet, 3.25 inches to place third overall and garner the Fighting Scots' first all-conference nod of the weekend and the seventh of her career. Additionally, the sophomore went 16.01 in the 100-meter hurdles to qualify as the fifth-fastest time heading into tomorrow's final.
Leaning in just ahead of Webster in the 100 hurdles was senior teammate Taryn Szalay, who posted a final-heat worthy time of 15.85, marking the fourth-fastest time of the day.
Scoring for the women in the steeplechase was senior Jackie White, who put in a sixth-place clip of 11:58.27, while junior Mackenzie Kellar reached 9 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault to place eighth.
Heading into tomorrow's final heats, sophomore Emani Kelley put in the top time in the 800 qualifiers with a clip of 2:22.85. In the open 400, first-year Regan Szalay qualified with the sixth-fastest time of 1:01.65.
First-year Akwia Tilton qualified for two final heats tomorrow after placing eighth in the 100 (12.79) and fifth in the 200 (25.89). Additionally, Tilton took home sixth-place in the long jump with 17 feet, 10.75 inches.
On the men's side, sophomore Brian Lief enters tomorrow's 800 final with the second-fastest qualifying time (1:57.71).
Meanwhile, scoring performances for the men included sophomore Jarret Art's seventh-place showing in the long jump (21 feet, 8.25 inches) and first-year thrower Spencer Wilson's eighth-place performance in the hammer throw (142 feet, 1 inch).
Saturday will feature a full slate of action, with field events scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. followed by running events at 2:15 p.m.
