Carney-Knisely Named to Academic All-America® Third Team

The College of Wooster's Geoffrey Carney-Knisely was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America® Team, the organization announced on Wednesday. Carney-Knisely was voted to the third-team by the Academic All-America® core program committee.

"Geoffrey is extremely committed in the classroom and in athletics, and he works very hard balancing out his academics with his running," said head coach Dennis Rice. "He's capable of achieving success in both areas, and his dedication carries over to the team concept, where he was voted team captain for the upcoming cross country season."

Carney-Knisely joins a distinguished list of Academic All-America® honorees at the College, and his selection marks the fifth time in the last seven years a member of the Fighting Scots' cross country or track & field programs have earned the prestigious recognition. Overall, he's the 48th Wooster student-athlete to earn one of college athletics' highest academic honors.

"Our recent track record with the Academic All-America® program says something about the type of student-athlete we attract here at the College," summed up Rice. "We have some great students who achieve great success academically, and attract quality students who are committed to working hard in the classroom, while having great balance to achieve success in cross country and track & field as well."

Carney-Knisely, who sports a perfect 4.0 grade-point average heading into his senior year as a biochemistry & molecular biology and sociology double-major, has excelled on and off the cross country course and track during his academic career at the College.

Outside of Wooster, the native of South Burlington, Vt. has worked with the infectious disease epidemiology department at the Vermont Department of Health. While there, he participated in CDC conference calls on management of the Zika virus and in Vermont's statewide emergency management simulation.

A regular in Wooster's top seven on the cross country course, Carney-Knisely turned in a 28:08.8 at the North Coast Athletic Conference Championships, where he was the fourth Scot across the finish line. On the track, the distance specialist logged a career-best time of 16:58.89 in the indoor 5000 meters this past winter at the Kenyon College Classic.
