Wooster Competitive in 69-56 Loss to Trine

The College of Wooster women's basketball team played a closely-contested second half against Trine University, but it wasn't enough to recover from a nine-point half time deficit, and the Scots dropped their seventh game in a row 69-56 Tuesday afternoon at Angola, Ind.

The Scots (1-8) experimented with a new-look starting lineup that featured Danielle Spinden, Ashley Lindemann, Lauren Cornwell, Maura Hall, and Mallory Band, and that group kept the game close initially.

Hall sunk a 3-pointer and Spinden scored on a lay-up to put Wooster on the scoreboard in the early goings, but Trine eventually built a 10-point lead around six minutes into the first half. Wooster responded with a Suvi Puripattarapan 3-pointer to cut the deficit to single digits (15-8), and went into the break down nine (33-24) following a basket in the paint by Jessica Wingen.

Sarah Abboud led a near Wooster comeback in the second half, as she connected on a 3-ball with 13:40 remaining in the game to draw the Scots within six (40-34). Then after a defensive stop, Cornwell drained a jumper in transition to make it a four-point game (40-36).

Trine responded with a 3-pointer to jump ahead by seven (43-36), but two free throw makes by Hall and another key basket by Abboud from behind the arc pushed Wooster within two (43-41) for the first time since early in the first quarter.

At that juncture, Trine gained back the momentum and closed the game out on a 26-15 scoring run.

On the stat sheet, Hall took advantage of her extended minutes and scored a career-high 15 points to go along with six rebounds. Wingen racked up her fourth double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds, and Abboud also scored in double-figures with 12 tallies.

Trine was paced by the duo of Megan Loveberry and Danielle Senf, who scored 17 and 16 points, respectively.

Next, the Scots will look to get back into the win column when they visit Waynesburg University on Dec. 30.
