Senior Salute: Maria Janasko

Throughout the spring and summer, we'll be honoring our senior student-athletes with a "Senior Salute" series. Today's featured senior is Maria Janasko, a communication studies major from Sheffield Lake, Ohio. Janasko is a member of the women's basketball team.

Q: Why did you choose to attend The College of Wooster?
A: My dad is a Wooster alumnus, and I have loved coming to campus ever since I was little! I loved tagging along with him when he would come back for alumni events!

Q: What does it mean to you to be a Fighting Scot student-athlete?
A: Being a Fighting Scot student-athlete is very special to me. My dad was on the swimming team while he attended college at Wooster. Therefore, it is nice to uphold the tradition. The community that surrounds Wooster's athletic programs is very supportive and I am happy that I get to be a part of something like that.

Q: What are some of your favorite memories as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: A favorite memory from my college experience would be meeting my lifelong friends through being a basketball player and being a part of Alpha Gamma Phi!

Q: What's the best part about being a student-athlete at The College of Wooster?
A: One of the best parts of being a student-athlete is the support we get from the community! Everyone is willing to support in some way or another and that just makes all of our hard work worth it!

Q: What else were you involved with on campus besides your sport?
A: I am part of Alpha Gamma Phi!

Q: Which College of Wooster faculty or staff member has made the greatest impact on you and why?
A: Coach (Nicole) Marshall has made a huge impact on my life personally. She has always encouraged me from day one. She continues to push me to be the best athlete that I can be, as well as the best person I can be!

Q: What other people or resources impacted your Wooster experience in a positive way and how did these people/resources set you up to be successful at Wooster?
A: Dr. (Rohini) Singh has made a positive impact on my overall Wooster experience. She has set me up to be successful at Wooster in the ways that she pushes her students to excel at the highest possible level.

Q: Tell us a bit about your Independent Study project?
A: My Independent Study focuses on professional female athletes and the ways in which they are portrayed throughout various sports media outlets!

Q: Tell us a bit about something cool you did as a student at The College of Wooster?
A: A memorable experience from my time at Wooster was when the women's basketball team took a trip to Roanoke, Virginia. It was a great bonding experience with some of my favorite people! We also played some really good teams which helped us improve our play as a unit.

Q: Reflecting back on your time at Wooster, what is one piece of advice you would give your first-year (freshman) self?
A: A piece of advice that I would give to my first-year self is don't blink. College flies by so fast, and every moment, good or bad, should be cherished because it was all a part of shaping me into the individual I am today.
