Wooster Falls in Opener to Capital, 63-51

Holloway COLUMBUS -- The College of Wooster women's basketball team hit the court for the first time this season under new head coach Mary Kate Tierney and took a 63-51 loss at Capital University on Wednesday.

Wooster shined in a 19-11 third quarter where they cut a double-digit deficit to just six after a 12-4 run and by scoring the final six points of the quarter. Sophomore Harley Holloway started the run with the first five points and first-year Maia Doescher scored the last four.

Wooster could not sustain its momentum into the fourth as Capital got its lead back into double digits.

Holloway and senior Masani Francis led the Scots with 12 points each. Capital's Emma Burns scored 25 for a game high.

Holloway had a strong start to the game, giving Wooster the first points of the contest with a three-pointer. Wooster led 10-8 as Holloway early recorded 5 points, two rebounds and an assist.

That would be Wooster's last lead as Capital took a 22-17 lead after the first quarter. Capital then used a 15-6 second quarter to lead 37-23 at halftime.

Doescher, senior Krista English and sophomore Melissa Burtscher all scored six points. Senior Jenna Stanton and junior Riley Thorr each added four. Sophomore Alyssa Chritz led Wooster with six rebounds.

The two teams were close in a number of statistical categories, but Capital held the clear edge of points in the paint at 30-14.

Wooster was outrebounded, 34-33. Each team made four three-pointers and were a turnover apart from one another.

Wooster shot 36 percent (21-for-59), while Capital went for 47 percent (25-for-54). Wooster was 5-for-8 from the foul line (63 percent), while Capital took double the attempts and shot 57 percent (9-for-16).

This was both teams' first game of the season. Wooster comes home Saturday to face Franciscan University at 1 p.m. in its home opener.
