Tierney, Scots Collect First Win

Mary Kate Tierney collected her first collegiate win as a head coach, and The College of Wooster women's basketball team defeated Franciscan University 65-56 on Saturday.

Wooster trailed 26-21 at halftime but brought the score to even at 45 after three quarters. They finally captured the lead, and for good, with 6:47 left after a layup from first-year Maia Doescher.

Sophomore Melissa Burtscher then connected on a 3-pointer to put Wooster ahead five. Wooster later brought its lead to 61-54 with two minutes to go after back-to-back layups from Harley Holloway and Alyssa Chritz.

From there, it turned into a free throw game for the Scots, who extended its lead to nine by the end of the game.

The sophomore Holloway finished with a game-high 17 points. Senior Jenna Stanton had her shot working for her, finishing with 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting. Classmate Masani Francis was the other Scot to reach double digits in scoring with 12.

Senior Krista English finished with eight points. Burtscher and Chritz each tallied six points, and Chritz's 11 rebounds was a game high.

Franciscan had four players reach double figures with Felicia MacGillivray leading the Barons with 14.

Wooster shot 45 percent (23-of-51) from the court, 25 percent (4-of-16) from 3-point range and 60 percent (15-of-25) from the foul line.

Franciscan (0-2) went 41 percent (24-of-58) from the court, 26 percent (5-of-19) from deep and 25 percent (3-of-12) from the charity stripe.

Wooster held the rebounding edge 35-33 but were outscored in the paint, 30-26, and in second chance points, 9-5. However, Wooster capitalized big with 20 points off turnovers.

Wooster moves to 1-1 on the year. They travel to Westminster on Tuesday.
