Titans Hold Off Resilient Scots

Masani Francis NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. – The College of Wooster women's basketball team rallied numerous times late but ultimately fell on the road to Westminster College 57-50 on Tuesday.

Seniors led the way for Wooster as Masani Francis scored a team-high 18 points. Krista English followed with 12 points and Jenna Stanton added 11. All three each recorded five rebounds as well.

Sophomore Alyssa Chritz led the Scots with 11 rebounds. It was her second consecutive game with double digit rebounds.

The game was on the upswing for the Scots as they tied the game at 30 midway through the third quarter. However, Westminster would use an 8-2 run to take a 38-32 lead after three quarters.

From there, Wooster once again clawed back, scoring in back-to-back possessions to open the fourth and cut the lead to one. Yet, Westminster distanced themselves from the Scots with six straight points, which launched a 10-2 run.

Francis put a stop to the run with a 3-pointer with 4:20 remaining. Stanton hit a jumper two minutes later and the Scots once again found themselves down by just four.

The two teams traded buckets, but time was not on Wooster's side. The Scots needed to foul, and Westminster went 6-for-6 on free throws to finish the game.

Westminster's Natalie Murrio scored a game-high 20 points. Lindsay Bell totaled a double-double with 13 points and 11 rebounds.

Wooster shot 30 percent (17-of-57) from the floor, 21 percent (4-of-19) from deep and 60 percent (12-of-20) from the foul line.

Westminster went 27 percent (17-of-63) from the court, 17 percent (3-of-18) from 3-point range and a stellar 87 percent (20-of-23) from the foul line.

Westminster (1-0) held the rebounding advantage by one, 47-46, and outscored Wooster in the paint 26-18. However, Wooster outscored the Titans on second chance points ,12-9, and each bench scored less than five points.

Wooster moves to 1-2. They host the Nan Nichols Classic this weekend and will host Spalding University at 3 p.m. Saturday.
