Strong Second Quarter Slows DePauw's Path to Victory

Jenna Stanton The College of Wooster women's basketball team fell victim to the ranked DePauw University Tigers on Saturday, 87-47.

DePauw, ranked 15th in the D3hoops.com poll and 7th in the WBCA Coaches' Poll, had five in double figures in scoring, including Maeve Summerville who scored a game-high 14 points.

Senior Jenna Stanton led the Scots with 10 points and nine rebounds.

The Scots were hurt early when senior Masani Francis fell into foul trouble. She committed three fouls within the first three minutes of the contest, forcing her to not return until the second half.

Wooster benefited from a pair of 3-pointers in the first quarter. Sophomore Harley Holloway gave Wooster its first points after DePauw went up 4-0. Later, classmate Alyssa Chritz connected to cut the team's deficit to five.

DePauw led 23-11 after the first quarter, but the Scots really fell into a rhythm in the second quarter thanks to the strong play of Stanton. She connected on a 3-pointer and later gave the team momentum with a blocked shot.

That led to her scoring on the other end and another bucket from Chritz, and Wooster found themselves trailing 27-20 with 4:15 left in the second.

However, a well-placed timeout from DePauw coach Kris Huffman slowed the Scots' momentum, and DePauw took a 35-22 lead at halftime. DePauw won the quarter by just one point, 12-11, with a last second layup.

DePauw then controlled the second half with a 25-7 third and a 27-18 fourth.

The Tigers found success down low with 48 points in the paint. They also won the battle of the boards 46-33.

Wooster shot 29 percent (16-of-56) for the game with an 85 percent clip (11-of-13) from the foul line.

DePauw (7-0, 2-0) shot 49 percent (33-of-68), including a 40 percent mark from deep (6-of-15) and a 69 percent clip from the foul line (15-of-22).

Wooster moves to 1-7 on the year and 0-2 in the NCAC. The Scots will host Allegheny College on Wednesday.
