Scots Drop First Game of New Year

Krista English The College of Wooster women's basketball team started the new year with a loss to Alma College on Sunday, 73-49.

Sophomores Harley Holloway and Alyssa Chritz led Wooster with 14 points each. Senior Krista English added 10 points and a team-high six rebounds as the starters scored all but two points.

Alma's Oretha Humphries scored a game-high 24 points. Stasha Warchock added 15, and Taylor Sas scored 11.

Wooster held its own in the first quarter with a 21-21 stalemate. The offense slowed down in the second, but Holloway followed four points from the first by scoring seven of Wooster's nine points in the second. The teams were tied at 25 midway through the quarter, and at the half, Alma led 33-30.

Alma pulled away with a 19-10 third quarter and then a 21-9 fourth. They started the third with a 7-2 run within the first two minutes that turned into a 12-2 run with 6:34 remaining.

They also had a strong start to the fourth with an 8-1 run.

Alma shot 46 percent (29-of-63) from the floor and 27 percent (5-of-19) from 3-point range. Wooster shot 31 percent (20-of-64) from the floor and 22 percent (4-of-18) from deep. Wooster also went 5-for-6 (83 percent) from the foul line.

Alma (8-4) outrebounded Wooster 45-30 and scored 23 points off Wooster turnovers. Alma also outscored Wooster in the paint 44-20 and in bench points 11-2.

Wooster drops to 3-10. They return to North Coast Athletic Conference play Wednesday with a trip to Kenyon College.
