Scots Defeat Kenyon For First Time Since 2009

Tamara Turner The College of Wooster women's basketball team defeated Kenyon College 71-68 on Wednesday in the program's first win against the Ladies since 2009.

The Scots broke Kenyon's 25-game winning streak behind a game-high 22 points from sophomore Harley Holloway.

Senior Masani Francis followed with 13 points, 11 of which came in the second half. Senior Jenna Stanton also scored 11 and dished out a game-high five assists.

The Scots held the conference's leading scorer, Katie Orefice, who averages 17.8 points per game, to just 11 points. Kenyon got the bulk of its scoring from Grace Connery and Claudia Cooke who scored 21 and 19, respectively.

The Ladies made no secret its strategy of feeding the ball into the paint, and it worked for the first 20 minutes. Kenyon scored 22 of its 24 second quarter points that way to pull ahead 40-31 at halftime.

However, the Scots adjusted, outscoring the Ladies 21-11 in the third, and Kenyon scored just 10 points in the paint for the remainder of the game.

Kenyon started the second half achieving its largest lead of the game at 11. From there, Wooster used a 7-0 run to bring the deficit to four.

The Scots finally tied the game with 50 seconds left in the quarter, and Francis gave the Scots its first lead as Wooster led 52-51 at the end of three quarters.

The teams battled in the fourth, but the Scots never trailed in the final 4:48. First-year Tamara Turner gave Wooster critical bench production, leading the Scots with six points in the quarter. She finished with a career-high nine points and grabbed six rebounds.

The final dagger, however, was a 3-pointer by Francis, breaking a 67 tie and giving the Scots the lead for good with 2:24 left.

Wooster shot 44 percent (27-of-62) from the floor, 33 percent (6-of-18) from deep and 65 percent (11-of-17) from the foul line. Kenyon went 40 percent (25-of-62) from the floor, 44 percent (4-of-9) from range and 73 percent (14-of-19) from the charity stripe.

Wooster's bench outscored Kenyon's 19-2. Joining Turner in the production was six points from Riley Thorr and four points from Maia Doescher.

Wooster (4-12) now sits in sixth place of the North Coast Athletic Conference at 3-4. Kenyon (5-13) drops to 3-6.

The win snaps a five-game skid for the Scots. They travel to Hiram College on Saturday in an attempt for the season sweep against the Terriers.
