Scots Show Off in Second Quarter in Loss to Terriers

Harley Holloway HIRAM -- The College of Wooster women's basketball team could not convert momentum from a 22-9 second quarter into the second half as Hiram College defeated the Scots 80-54 in North Coast Athletic Conference action on Saturday.

Wooster rallied after trailing 16-9 in the first quarter. They scored 14 unanswered in the second quarter to come to within one point, and first-year Tamara Turner sunk a 3-pointer near the buzzer to knot the score at 28 at halftime.

However, Hiram opened the third with a 10-0 run and never looked back. They finished with a 27-10 third and a 25-16 fourth.

Hiram's Madison Branch scored 21 to lead all scorers. Haley Thompson scored 15 and grabbed 12 rebounds for the double double.

For Wooster, sophomore Harley Holloway scoerd 18 points on 6-of-14 shooting. Turner reached a new career-high with 12 points, which was the only scoring Wooster had from its bench. Senior Krista English also scored in double figures with 10.

Hiram outrebounded Wooster 52-28 and outscored them in the paint 44-12. They led by as many as 29 and never trailed in the game.

Wooster shot just 29 percent (17-of-59) from the court and 23 percent (5-of-22) from deep. They connected on 15-of-21 free throws (71 percent).

Hiram went 47 percent (31-of-66) from the floor, 29 percent (5-of-17) from range and 62 percent (13-of-21) from the charity stripe.

The loss gives the two teams a split in the season series after Wooster took the first matchup 66-58 on Dec. 11.

Wooster drops to 4-13 overall and 3-5 in the NCAC. Hiram improves to 6-11 overall and 2-7 in conference play.

Wooster will have the day off Sunday before traveling to Ohio Wesleyan University on Monday.
