First Half Run Dooms Wooster's Chances

Masani Francis GAMBIER – The College of Wooster women's basketball team got off to a good start, but a 19-0 run quelled any momentum in a 75-55 loss to Kenyon College on Sunday.

Wooster led 10-4 after the first seven minutes of play in which they prevented Kenyon from a field goal. However, once Kenyon connected on its first, it started a 19-0 run that changed the course of the game.

Kenyon took a 17-10 lead after the first quarter and led 23-10 until first-year Tamara Turner halted the run with a free throw with 6:07 left in the second quarter. Kenyon kept its foot on the pedal to lead 37-21 at halftime.

Kenyon continued to improve with a 24-point third quarter, but Wooster also had its best quarter offensively with 19 points. Wooster then held a slight 15-14 advantage in the fourth.

Kenyon's Madelyn Anderson scored a game-high 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting and going 5-of-9 from 3-point range.

The Ladies also had two double doubles. Katie Orefice had 12 points and 12 rebounds, and Claudia Cooke scored 18 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Kenyon's starters scored all but six of its points.

Sophomore Harley Holloway scored 12 points to lead Wooster. Senior Masani Francis added 11, and Turner finished with nine points and a team-high five rebounds.

Kenyon shot 41 percent (24-of-58) to Wooster's 30 percent (20-of-67). Kenyon also won the battle of the boards 51-34.

Kenyon moves to 6-15 overall and 4-8 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. Wooster drops to 4-16 and 3-8 in conference play.

Wooster will look to get back in the win column Tuesday when they travel to Allegheny College.
