Scots Play One of Best First Quarters in Loss to Oberlin

Maia Doescher The College of Wooster women's basketball team played one of its best opening quarters on Monday in an 88-56 loss to Oberlin College.

Oberlin, who is second in the North Coast Athletic Conference with an 18-3 overall record and 11-3 conference record, found themselves trailing 20-16 after one quarter of play on Monday. The Yeowomen led 15-14 before Wooster went on a 9-1 run that continued early into the second quarter.

The Scots scored six points in the final 1:09 of the first and opened the second with a 3-pointer from first-year Tamara Turner.

The bench provided a spark in the first quarter. First-year Maia Doescher scored on both her shot attempts, sophomore Melissa Burtscher recorded two steals and junior Riley Thorr had four points and two rebounds.

Wooster got stuck with seven minutes left in the second quarter. They led 26-19 when the shots stopped falling and later trailed 32-28 at halftime.

The second half belonged to Oberlin, who consistently worked the ball down low to its leadings scorer, Bryana Woodard. Woodard finished with a team-high 17 points.

Oberlin won the third quarter 28-12 and later won the fourth 28-16.

Wooster sophomore Harley Holloway led all scorers with 19 points thanks to an 8-of-9 mark from the foul line. She was the only Scot to reach double figures.

Doescher scored eight points off the bench to tie a career-high and contributed three assists. Seniors Masani Francis and Jenna Stanton each added seven points.

Stanton led the team with seven rebounds, while Turner finished with six points and six rebounds.

Oberlin shot 47 percent (34-of-72) and an effecient 50 percent (6-of-12) from range. They were also 14-of-18 (78 percent) from the line.

Wooster finished shooting 27 percent (17-of-64) from the floor, 28 percent (7-of-25) from deep and an impressive 15-of-17 (88 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Scots committed just 10 turnovers and scored 17 points off Oberlin's 15 miscues.

Wooster is now 4-19 and 3-11 in conference play. They will host Ohio Wesleyan University on Wednesday in the team's home finale.
