Stanton Scores Career-High 24 Points as Scots Close Regular Season

Jenna Stanton OBERLIN – Senior Jenna Stanton closed out the regular season with a career-high 24 points as The College of Wooster women's basketball team fell 80-63 to Oberlin College on Saturday.

Stanton scored in double figures for the ninth game this season as Wooster secured the eighth seed in the upcoming North Coast Athletic Conference Tournament. Stanton was 8-of-13 from the floor, 4-of-9 from range and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line.

Classmate Masani Francis followed with a 17-point performance on 7-of-15 shooting. She connected on 3-of-4 3-pointers as well.

Oberlin had three reach double figures. Gina Lombard led with 15 points, while Alyson Jefferson and Rowan Smith each scored 13.

Wooster shot 36 percent from the floor (23-of-64) and 35 percent from deep (9-of-26). They went a perfect 8-of-8 from the foul line.

Oberlin shot 46 percent (30-of-65) but just 24 percent from range (4-of-17). They were 16-of-20 (80 percent) from the charity stripe.

The Yeowomen got out to a 6-0 start, but Wooster countered quickly with a 7-0 run that gave them its only lead of the game. Stanton scored the first two baskets, and sophomore Harley Holloway gave Wooster the lead with a 3-pointer.

Unfortunately, Oberlin then scored the next 10 points before Francis thwarted the run with a 3-pointer. Oberlin led 18-10 after one quarter.

Wooster cut the lead to four early in the second with baskets from first-year Maia Doescher and Stanton. However, that was the closest Wooster would get as Oberlin expanded its lead to 34-22 at halftime.

Oberlin grew its lead to 22 by the end of the third quarter, but Wooster put together its best offensive quarter in the fourth with 28 points. Stanton scored 12 of her points in the quarter.

Oberlin won the battle of the boards 44-33. Oberlin scored 16 fast break points while Wooster did not have any, and outscored the Scots in the paint 46-24.

This was the second meeting between the two teams this week. Oberlin took an 88-56 win on Monday.

With the win, Oberlin moved to 20-3 overall and 13-3 in the NCAC to secure the second seed of the NCAC Tournament.

Wooster finishes the regular season at 4-21 overall and 3-13 in conference play. Next, they will face the No. 1 seeded DePauw University Tigers (22-2, 15-0) in the conference tournament on Tuesday.
