Scots Go Off, Score Most Points Ever in Double Overtime Win

Where to start?

The College of Wooster women's basketball team shattered its program record with 111 points on Friday as they needed two overtimes to defeat Miami-Hamilton University 111-100.

Wooster last scored 96 points back in 2019, and on Friday they were one point shy of tying the North Coast Athletic Conference record. However, the 211 points does break the conference record for combined points in a game.

Individually, the Scots had some monster performances. Four scored 20 or more points and three recorded double-doubles.

Sophomore Ella Biondi led the way with a game-high 36 points, while adding 11 rebounds. Her 36 points is not only a career-high but the fifth most scored in program history.

She went 16 of 30 from the floor and is now tied atop the program record of field goals made in a single game. It's been done twice before, once in 2016 by Lauren Hancher and again in 1986 by Lisa Diment.

Senior Alyssa Chritz set another career-high with 27 points on 8 of 17 shooting. She went 7 of 8 from the foul line and 4 of 8 from deep. Her 10 rebounds gave her the double-double, and she also tallied six assists and a game-high four steals.

First-year Ace Sturdivant set career-high marks in several categories including points where she scored 23. She was two assists shy from the triple double, finishing with a team-high 12 rebounds and eight assists.

She shot 5 of 15 from the floor, 4 of 8 from range and went 9 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Finally, sophomore Ella Dean tied her career-high with 21 points, going 6 of 12 from the floor, 3 of 8 from range and perfect 6 of 6 from the foul line. She also grabbed five rebounds and collected three steals.

First-year Alexis Lovejoy connected on a 3-pointer for 3 points, and sophomore Erica Beaty played 36 valuable minutes off the bench.

Miami-Hamilton was led by a 34-point performance from Beri NgwaShalaya Heath contributed 24 points for the Harriers also.

The two teams were close in several categories. The Harriers outscored Wooster in the paint 42-38, but Wooster held the second chance points advantage at 10-7. Both teams scored 10 fast break points, and Wooster outrebounded Miami-Hamilton 53-41.

Ngwa forced the game into overtime on a layup with 41 seconds remaining as neither team could use the remaining time to end the game.

Miami-Hamilton had the momentum in the first overtime, taking their biggest lead of the game at 88-83 with 2:13 remaining. However, Wooster connected on a pair of 3-pointers back-to-back from Sturdivant and Dean to take a one-point lead with 47 seconds left.

Beaty hit a free throw to give Wooster a two-point cushion, but it was once again Ngwa who came through on a layup with 10 seconds to go.

In the second overtime, Ngwa opened scoring with a layup but Wooster pounced with its best scoring run of the game, scoring 14 straight to lead by double digits 104-92 with 1:26 left.

Wooster again gained momentum on back-to-back 3-pointers this time starting with Chritz and anchored again by Dean. Wooster went 14 of 18 from the foul line in overtime to put the game away.

Wooster is now 2-4 and will travel to Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday for its next contest.
