Sturdivant Excels Early at Carnegie Mellon

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – First-year Ace Sturdivant made it a close first quarter for the College of Wooster women's basketball team, scoring all 12 of their points in the quarter against Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday.

Unfortunately, the Scots could not keep pace with the Tartans, falling 81-31.

However, in the first quarter it was all Sturdivant. The Scots trailed by as many as eight until Wooster went on an 8-2 run, highlighted by an and-one conversion and a 3-pointer by the first-year Sturdivant. She ended with 12 points in the quarter as Wooster trailed 14-12 after one.

In the second quarter, the Scots went cold. They recorded their only field goal of the quarter at the 5:09 mark as Alyssa Chritz gave Wooster its first made field goal outside of Sturdivant.

Meanwhile, Carnegie Mellon scored 22 points to lead 36-15 at halftime.

The deficit only increased from there as Sturdivant and Chritz were the only two Scots to score until Ella Dean and Anna Hardink scored in the fourth.

Sturdivant finished with 18 points and four rebounds. Chritz scored eight points and grabbed five rebounds. Dean finished with four points and Hardink scored a point on a free throw.

Carnegie Mellon was led by Anisha Chintala who scored 14 points and eight rebounds. Savannah Gibbs recorded 12 points and 11 rebounds for the double-double.

Wooster finished the game shooting just 17 percent (11 of 65) from the court and 8 percent (2 of 26) from range as Sturdivant hit Wooster's only two 3-pointers. Wooster also went 7 of 12 (58 percent) from the foul line.

Carnegie Mellon (7-2) shot 46 percent (30 of 66) for the game, 44 percent (8 of 18) from deep and 93 percent (13 of 14) from the foul line. They outrebounded Wooster 57-37 and blanked them in fastbreak points (20) and bench points (30).

Wooster (2-5) will look to get back on track with two home games next week, starting by welcoming The University of Olivet on Wednesday.
