Women Compete with Oberlin in NCAC Matchup

Alexis Lovejoy OBERLIN -- A valiant effort was put forth from The College of Wooster women's basketball team on Wednesday as they traveled to Oberlin College and took a 61-50 defeat.

A close game throughout the night, the Scots ultimately fell out of the game when Oberlin embarked on a 9-0 run to begin the fourth quarter. They stretched a 44-41 game into a 12-point lead, their biggest of the night.

Otherwise, Wooster competed right along with the 12-4 Yeowomen who improved to 3-2 in the North Coast Athletic Conference. After Oberlin took the opening stanza 18-13, Wooster won the second 14-12 and tied Oberlin in the third 14-14 to set up the ever deciding fourth quarter.

Wooster never led but were aided by a 7-0 run in the first quarter that tied the contest at 13-13. First-year Kylie Parsons started the run with an offensive putback, and on the next possession she grabbed another board that led to a 3-pointer from senior Melissa Burtscher.

Senior Alyssa Chritz scored a game-high 16 points thanks to a 10 of 11 night from the foul line. She also added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals.

First-year Ace Sturdivant added 12 points with five rebounds and three assists, while classmate Alexis Lovejoy scored 11 points, one shy of her career-high.

Her 11 points helped Wooster's bench outscore Oberlin's 16-8 for the night.

Sophomore Erica Beaty collected eight rebounds and first-year Anna Hardink scored four points in the starting lineup.

Oberlin had three starters score in double figures as Alyson Jefferson finished with an 11-point, 11-rebound double-double. She also added seven assists but committed nine turnovers.

Wooster shot 29 percent (17 of 59) from the floor, and Oberlin shot 39 percent (19 of 49). Oberlin took the rebounding battle 42-33.

Wooster moves to 4-11 overall and 0-5 in conference play. The return home Saturday to face the conference leading DePauw Tigers.
