Sturdivant Scores 14 Against NCAC Leading Tigers

The College of Wooster women's basketball team fell to DePauw University 68-43 on Saturday.

DePauw, leaders of the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 13-5 overall record and 6-1 NCAC mark, entered having received votes in the last week's national rankings. On Saturday, they never did anything flashy but were consistent enough to withstand Wooster.

A pair of early timeouts seemed to halt whatever momentum Wooster was building in the game. The Scots led 7-6 at the first media timeout in the first quarter but went cold not hitting another field goal until Alyssa Chritz scored with 7:43 left in the second quarter.

That started a mini-run by the Scots as first-year Ace Sturdivant scored the next five points to force a DePauw timeout with the Tigers leading 22-15.

Yet, Wooster would close the quarter with just one additional field goal, a 3-pointer from Melissa Burtscher, and would trail 33-18 at halftime.

DePauw's lead slowly grew in the second half, taking both final quarters by five points each.

Sturdivant led all scorers with 14 points after shooting 5 of 8 from the floor. Chritz finished with seven points and sophomore Ella Biondi collected five points and five rebounds.

DePauw was led with 13 points from Ava Hassel.

Second chance points hurt the Scots as DePauw scored 28 points on additional chances. They outrebounded Wooster 48-25 and its bench outscored Wooster's 33-11.

Wooster shot 33 percent (15 of 46) from the floor and 29 percent (6 of 21) from range. DePauw finished the day shooting 38 percent (24 of 64) overall and 26 percent (5 of 19) from deep.

Wooster (4-12, 0-6 NCAC) will host Waynesburg University on Monday in the team's final non-conference game of the season.
