Wooster Wraps Up January at Hiram

The cold spell continued for The College of Wooster women's basketball team on Wednesday as they fell to Hiram College 63-47 on Wednesday in North Coast Athletic Conference action.

The Scots shot 1 of 15 from 3-point range, making it the second straight game they've connected on just one basket from deep. Fortunately, Hiram was not much better, shooting 18 percent (2 of 11).

However, Hiram found themselves in control of the game from the first quarter and beyond thanks to the play of Brooke Hickman. Hickman scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds for the double-double.

Wooster was led by an 18-point performance from first-year Ace Sturdivant. Sturdivant made Wooster's lone 3-pointer and was Wooster's most efficient from the field, going 7 of 16 from the floor.

Senior Alyssa Chritz added 11 points, and sophomore Ella Biondi added 10 points and eight rebounds.

Chritz had two solid looks to open the game to give Wooster an early lead. A pair of Biondi free throws made it 6-2 before the Scots hit a drought, not scoring until Sturdivant scored on a layup with 49 seconds remaining in the quarter.

That allowed Hiram to embark on a 13-2 run and to win the first quarter 15-8.

Hiram stayed in control for the remainder of the game. To Wooster's credit, they only lost the second and third quarters by just a point each. Yet, Hiram secured the win with a 19-12 fourth.

Wooster ended up shooting 31 percent (18 of 58), while Hiram shot 44 percent (24 of 54). From the foul line, Wooster shot 56 percent (10 of 18), and Hiram shoot 77 percent (13 of 17).

Wooster (5-15, 0-9 NCAC) won the battle of the boards 41-37 and added 12 second chance points. Hiram (8-12, 3-6 NCAC) had 23 bench points compared to just six from Wooster and committed just 11 turnovers to Wooster's 16.

The Scots will celebrate senior day on Saturday when they host Kenyon College. In addition, The College will celebrate National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
