The College of Wooster women's golf team made history this weekend, as it won a tournament for the first time in the program's five-year history, and the Fighting Scots did so in impressive fashion as they had three of the top-four individuals in the 63-player field at the Ohio Wesleyan University Fall Invitational, which took place at the Safari Golf Club in Powell, Ohio.

Wooster has steadily improved since the program's inception, including a pair of runner-up team finishes at 12-team tournaments last season, but it took a big step Saturday and Sunday at the par-72, 5823-yard course in central Ohio. The Fighting Scots started with a school-record 323 to grab a six-stroke lead over the opening 18 holes, then matched it with another 323 to hold off the University of Charleston, 646-648, for the title in the 10-team field. The third-place team, host Ohio Wesleyan, was 31 shots back of Wooster.

In another first for the Wooster program, junior Sharmeen Chinoy was the medalist of the tournament, carding a 77 on Saturday and following with a 78 to finish four strokes clear of the runner-up, Kenzi Turner of Charleston (159).

Some of Chinoy's best competition came from teammates Hannah Buzolits and Emily Howerton, who tied for third. They each totaled 160, with Buzolits shooting 82, then matching Chinoy's 78 and Howerton turning in back-to-back 80s.

The Scots' other starters, Mallorey Stack and Victoria Roney, each contributed to the team score. Stack posted an 84 during the first 18 and Roney an 87 Sunday.

Also noteworthy, Wooster exhibited its depth. Competing as individuals, first-year Leigh Yartz (88-83) and senior Alyssa Gilbert (85-91) tied for 13th- and 23rd-place, respectively.

The Scots will be off from competition this week, then host the Eva Shorb Weiskopf Invitational at the Wooster Country Club on Sept. 27-28.
