Div. II-Heavy Tournament No Problem for Scots as Wooster Posts Third-Lowest Team Round, Places Fourth

Victoria Roney

The College of Wooster women's golf team continued its impressive fall by topping three Div. II programs, and carding the third-lowest team round of the tournament to cap play on Monday at the Ohio Valley University Fall Classic at the Marietta Country Club in Marietta, Ohio. The Fighting Scots placed fourth out of eight teams with a two-day total of 717.

Senior Victoria Roney led the way with a top-five finish in a field that featured six Div. II programs, Wooster, and Marietta College. Roney opened with an 88 on Sunday, and followed with an impressive 80 on Monday to finish at 168. Of note, Roney's 80 tied for the lowest round of the tournament outside of the scorecard of Marietta's Jackie Cunningham, who earned medalist honors at 157 after rounds of 78 and 79. For Roney, the finish marked the second straight top-five showing for the Scots' lone senior.

First-year Tongtong Wu turned in a strong 181 for the hilly 36-hole tournament that featured a par-72, 5,815-yard layout. Wu had a 91 on her scorecard on Sunday, and bettered that by one shot on Sunday to finish in a three-way tie for 14th-place at 181.

Hannah Appleman's 86 on Monday moved the sophomore up four spots on the leaderboard and into the top 20. Appleman finished at 182, and Monday's score marked a 10-stroke bounce-back from Sunday.

First-years Megan Gronau and Lilly Dunning placed just outside of the top 20. Gronau, who came in 21st-place, opened with a 92 on Sunday and followed that up with a 97 on Monday for a 189, while Dunning was right behind at 190 thanks to back-to-back 95s.

Sophomore Emily Stoehr competed as an individual and placed 37th at 243.

West Virginia Wesleyan College captured the team title at 681. Only the Bobcats' 346 on Sunday and 335 on Monday bested Wooster's second-round team score of 351.

Wooster returns to action at its fall home event – the Eva Shorb Weiskopf Invitational – held Oct. 7-8 at Wooster Country Club.
