Women's Golf

Lisa Campanell Komara continues her 40-year coaching career in 2023-24, this being her 14th season at the head of The College of Wooster’s women’s golf program. In fact, she’s the only coach for Wooster's newest varsity sport that began competition with the 2010-11 season.

That first year of existence saw Wooster score an impressive third-place finish in the North Coast Athletic Conference Championship Series. From there, the program continued to develop, and has reached new heights in recent years. First, Wooster captured its first tournament title in program history at the 2014 Ohio Wesleyan University, and in fact, Fighting Scots occupied three of the top-four spots individually in the 63-competitor field. Wooster followed that performance up with a second conseuctive title at the 2015 Ohio Wesleyan Fall Invitational. In 2017, a program-best three student-athletes earned all-conference certificates, while during the 2018-19 season, the Scots won a trio of tournaments. More recently, Wooster won three tournaments during the 2021-22 academic year and placed third at the NCAC Championships for the first time in over a decade. Wooster's 335.5 scoring average for the 2022-23 season marked a new program record as did Melissa Burtscher's 81.2 season average.

Campanell Komara was previously Wooster’s women’s basketball coach for 13 seasons (1997-2010), winning 122 games along the way. Among her hardwood highlights were three victories over the eventual NCAC champions, as well as a 14-12 record in 2006-07, which marked the team's first winning record in 14 years.

Campanell Komara had a 12-year tenure as women’s basketball coach at Bethany (W.Va.) College, where she won 126 games, capped by a 22-4 mark and the school’s first trip to the NCAA Div. III Championships.

Besides coaching basketball at Bethany, Campanell Komara also handled stints as the head volleyball coach (1985-93) and head women’s tennis coach (1994-97), and left as the school’s all-time winningest coach in all three sports. She also served as coordinator of women’s athletics (1987-91).

Active in golf for years as a clinician, competitor, and volunteer, Campanell Komara taught golf classes for the physical education major at Bethany during her tenure there (1985-97) and has helped out at a number of LPGA events, highlighted by the 1992 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club near Pittsburgh.

Campanell Komara, who also was a multi-sport coach at Kent State University-East Liverpool (1983-85), is a graduate of Beaver Local High School in East Liverpool, Ohio, and earned a bachelor’s degree in health and physical education from West Liberty State College in 1982. She went on to earn a master's degree in sport administration from West Virginia University, and has all of her coursework completed, but her dissertation in the higher education administration doctoral program at West Virginia. She is a certified mental sport performance professional.

Campanell Komara and her husband, Joe, reside in Wooster. They have two adult children, sons Andrew and Kevin, a 2017 alumnus of the College who was a four-year letterwinner in football, who recently married Georgia Danikas.
