WOOSTER, Ohio - The College of Wooster's Nina Dine scored with
52 seconds remaining in the third overtime during Saturday's game
with Kenyon College, propelling the Fighting Scots to a thrilling
15-14 North Coast Athletic Conference victory in women's lacrosse
action at Carl Dale Memorial Field.
After each team failed to score in the second overtime session,
Wooster (5-3, 2-0 NCAC) gained the opening draw control in the
third extra period. Both sides had a possession before Wooster
grabbed a loose ball and slowed it down for the final shot. With
time ticking away and the Scots working the ball around the
perimeter, the ball found Dine's stick and she snuck around the
back of the net, putting the shot past the Kenyon goalkeeper for
the victory.
The Scots held the biggest lead of the day at 4-0 in the first
4:12 of play, thanks to a pair of scores by Taryn Higgins and
single tallies from Hillary Darragh and Jess Cleveland. Kenyon came
back with five unanswered goals to take a 5-4 lead, and the two
sides traded goals over the remaining minutes of the first half,
heading into the halftime break deadlocked at 8-8.
Over the duration of the second half, the Ladies would hold leads
of 9-8, 10-9, 11-10, 12-11, 13-12, and 14-13 during the first
overtime, only to see the Scots tie it each time.
In a game that featured nine ties, Kenyon (7-2, 1-1 NCAC) held a
13-12 lead after scoring with 4:04 to go in the second half.
However, Wooster done what it had all day, as Carly Carey found the
back of the net with just 1:10 left in regulation.
As it had done all game long, Kenyon took a one-goal lead with
1:15 left in the first of two three-minute overtime periods to grab
a 14-13 advantage. Wooster evened the score one more time on a
free-position score just 24 seconds into the second three-minute
overtime.
Higgins led Wooster with a five-goal day on just seven shots,
while Carey finished with four goals. Dine's game-winner gave her a
four-point outing with two goals and two helpers, while Darragh
also posted a pair of goals and an assist.
Jackie Sherriffs led Kenyon with five points coming on three goals
and two assists. Additionally for Kenyon, Jenny Fitzgerald and
Meghan Henshall each tallied a hat trick.
In net, the Scots' Jamie Dannenberg made a season-high 17 saves,
including six in the extra periods, en route to the win, and Chase
Krueter kept her squad in the game by producing 15 stops on the
opposing end.
Next, Wooster hosts Allegheny College (4-4, 1-1 NCAC) on Tuesday
at 5 p.m.
